Central Vacuum System
Maybe it's more a question for the Ladies here on TRF but anyway I am firing the question.
We are thinking to have a Central Vacuum System installed in our new home (yes . . . in Cal . . . ) So I would like to know what we should expect of it . . . Seems to make a lot of less noise . . . Tell me ! HAGOne |

I think it makes the same noise , but because the main unit is hidden away you don't hear it .... Unless you stand next to it in the garage or wherever.
We had one - pros were that it sucked well , no need to lug the motor around , long pipe Cons - besides the initial cost , if you happen to suck something up that shouldn't be there , you might get problems. Wife managed to suck the kids sock from under the bed ( yes, boys ) , luckily it got stuck in the pipe before it went into the wall. Took me a good few hours to try and get it out - because the pipe is long you can't just push it out with a broom or something. Overall , I would recommend it , just get one of the well known makes so that spare parts later on will not be an issue. The pipe doesn't last forever and fitting differ. |

Hi Marc,
My house came with one, the sellers told me up front it was not working well. Fortunatley, my cleaning crew brings their own vacuum, I've never even turned on the central unit. What area did you purchase in? |

I worked as a B2B sales rep for Eureka/Sanitaire/Electolux floor care appliances & I would recommend the red colored Sanitaire Commercial upright commercial vacs......they last a long time & really suck (a little vac humor)

We put one in 15 years ago when we built our house and haven't used it in the last 5 years +. A couple pipes are clogged as described earlier and my wife prefers using a "normal" vacuum instead. We're building a new house for my youngest son and his wife and kids and the consensus was not to install one in that house.

We put one in when we built our house 8 years ago, no problems. Still works fine. Two boys and no socks down the tube so far.
Even so, probably wouldn't do it again. It's fairly expensive, and not really much more convenient than a regular vacuum cleaner. You've still got to tote the hose, etc. around from room to room. At some point, it will certainly reach the end of it's useful life, and be a PITA to repair.

There was already one in the house when we bought it back in 1998. I don't know how old it was then. It's a Sears Kenmore. Works great. I had to replace the hose once due to cracking at a cost of ~$150. It gets used a couple of times/week. Emptied quarterly.
Overall I'm really happy with it.

I had the Sanitaire SC888. It's a beast.
I got a top of the line Dyson a couple years ago because of the integrated tools, bagless, etc. Probably a poor choice. Feels cheap, but so far so good. Cleans fine though, at least that's what the maid tells me.

They have one of them in the martial arts studio. I'm sure it would die a quick death with my level of dog hair. ;)

Central vacs are great, especially if there are any allergy sufferers in the house as the exhaust can be vented outside.
Make sure the canister & motor unit is isolated and the noise will be minimal. I have had two in different houses and now am in an older home that does not have it. I do miss it even though the wife bought a top of the line Dyson.
