I started off with 1000 grit wet and dry paper wrapped round a steel ruler to remove the deep scratches. Once they are out the crystal is rubbed to a shine with the chrome polish on some toilet roll.

Having the sand paper wrapped around a ruler gives more purchase and accuracy when doing the donkey work and allows you to avoid the edges of the date mag. 1000 paper is very gentle and doesn't remove a lot of material. The chrome polish will remove the marks of the sand paper and leave a very clean surface.
