Rolex 1601 DJ circa 1951 purchase advise

Need the help of the experts. A buddy of mine is getting rid of his vintage 1601 DJ and i was interested in purchasing it. He's asking 2k USD. I checked the serial and it comes out to be a circa 1951. It's a 2 tone 14k a little scratches here and there but over all looks good. Is 2K a reasonable price for this vintage?

Thanks

Its A fair price it really depends on if the band is in good condition and if its serviced, nice hands and dial.

It's actually from the early '60s (the 1601 didn't appear until 1959), possibly with a service dial (tritium dots look too white if 50 years old), but I'm not sure. What is the SN?

$2000 may be a bit on the high side, esp. if it is in need of service. Is the bracelet stretched or in good shape? The lugs look a bit on the polished side.

I'm not an expert, but this is my first impression about the age, too. The price depends on the condition (of course), and the bracelet is a big part of the condition.

$2,000 isn't a bad deal, if you wear it for a while without having to service it. I've got a TOG that's about the same age, as well as a 14k DJ from '66, and the TOG is still a very reliable and tough watch. I did replace the bracelet a few years ago.

1961. Dial is definitely a service replacement (tritium dials didn't appear until about 1964), so isn't worth 2000.

Just my two cents: you are doing the right thing by negotiating. There are many correct examples available in similar condition in the $1500-1600 range.
