Quartz watch recommendations?

Do you guys have a favorite quartz watch that you recommend? I'm interested in possibly buying a quartz watch; something that I won't have to send in for servicing. A guy I know has an IWC Quartz that's very classy looking. Anyway, I'm looking for thoughts. Thanks!

Oysterquartz!

Seriously, there are LOTS of great quartz watches, from Swiss companies (IWC, Omega, Longines, Hamilton, Tissot, Wenger, TAG Heuer, etc.) and Japanese (Seiko and Citizen are my favorites).

We just bought my father-in-law a titanium Seiko Kinetic with a rotor and clear caseback - he loves it!

Quarts timepieces are excellent today.. But you know, they are not completely maintenance free either. There are mechanical parts that need to be lubricated and replaced periodically too.

I like the Omega Quartz models..Omega made some great strides in the 80's with quartz technology until they realized their calling was to get back on top in the mechanical arena. They are very similar in look to the automatic models but without the automatic on the dial.

Seiko is a world leader in quartz watches

The bottom line, you need to decide the look you want and go from there..

Yeah, I realized that I asked a very generic question. I'd like a watch that's versatile, so something that's likely a white, silver, or gray face. It can be SS, but preferably not a black leather band.

It seemed as though the Omega quartz watches are black faced or blue faced. They do look nice, and I'm giving them a good look.

Take a look at Breitling's superquartz as its thermocompensated meaning it can take the variations in temperature which can lead into inaccuracies.

You could try a nice Citizen Eco-drive. No battery, runs on solar power. Keeps great time and looks nice too.

3500 USD for the entry level is a lot of $$$ though, especially for a daily beater.
Believe or not, the Swiss watch people categorize it as a mechanical watch, and not as a hybrid. There are almost 200 parts and only like 5 of them are non mechanical.
It is basically a mechanical watch that uses an electromagnetic brake to control the rate at which the spring unwinds.

I'd recommend an Omega Seamaster AquaTerra, which can be had in either white or silver face.
And it is available in both quartz or mechanical.

yeah, I'm not looking to spend a whole lot on this quartz watch; certainly not $3,000. I wish the speedmaster broad arrow came in a quartz.

I can't say enough nice things about Citizen Eco-drive. I own two of them - one for over a decade now. I'm not a big fan of spending over $1K for a quartz watch but I don't knock anyone else who does. You can't go wrong with a Seiko or Citizen.

That's kind of the trouble I've been having. I don't have a budget. It really depends on the watch. A guy I know has an IWC quartz that's just beautiful. I would spend more money on a watch like that. It's difficult for me to get up spending similar amounts of money on a Seiko, even though I understand how nice of a watch, look-wise and mechanically, it might be.

Breitlings are a bit too busy for my taste. And I don't want a watch that's bigger than 40mm because of my small wrists.

I threw this question out to get a better understanding of what's out there, so I can do my research.

The AT I have is only 2mm larger than my GMTII, but it looks huge by comparison:

Good luck on your search!

Hmmm, I think the Breitling I saw at Costco the other day was less than 40mm, but I'm not sure. I am partial to Omega though - these seem nice, especially the second one:

Earlier I mentioned the OQ. Do those not appeal to you at all? Most of us consider them the finest quartz watches ever made, and you can pick up a nice example for under $2K.

I have an older SMP in 36mm (a chronometer, not quartz) that I still really love! It was my best watch and daily wearer for 7 years until I got Bluesy. Here's a pic:

Here are two of my favorites.

Citizen Skyhawk

Omega X-33

But from what you said, they're probably too busy for you.

I'd go for a nice pre-owned Rolex Oyster-Quartz!
  • They are not made anymore,
  • are still to be had at decent prices,
  • will become collectable no doubt about that and
  • they are the only other highly anti-magnetic (to 1,000 Oersted) watches that Rolex has ever issued besides the Milgauss.

If you haven't had time to decide yet, go for a Casio G-shock. It's a good beater watch - this way it pacifies your urge to get a quartz watch

My beater is Seiko Perpetual Calendar with the 8f32 movement. Ten years of banging through airports, in the bilges of power boats, cockpits of fishing boats and slamming around in golf carts and all it's needed is a new crystal and one battery two years ago.

Thank you guys for all your help. I think I'm going to go with a Seiko chronograph (replacing the SS band with a leather one) or an Ironman. I decided against going for an expensive quartz.

I do like the quartz Omegas, but if I get an Omega, then I think I'm going to get the Speedmaster Broad Arrow. If only they made that one in a quartz.
