Thai Car Prices

So, earlier today I went with a friend to a local BMW garage in Bangkok to view the new BMW M5. He is interested in buying one so had an appointment with the dealer. As it is a car I love he asked if I would like to accompany him to take a look. I couldn't wait. Well, actually, it turns out I most definitely can wait. You would need your head examined.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the U.S. price starts at approx. $92,500.

At today's exchange rate the current Thai price (in dollars) for the new BMW M5 is $385,110 (11,999,999 Thai Baht)

For imported cars that are not manufactured or assembled here there is up to 300% import duty for cars brought in.

The dealer who is a friend of my friend told him that he has already sold 5 of them.

He also told us that the new M6 Gran Coupe will be at least 14m Baht which converts to $449,300

Crazy! I live in Nicaragua and prices are high as well (350z for $75k, Honda CRV $40k, Toyota land cruiser basic with cloth seats for $90k, with one equipped like us spec for $130k, and Lexus model for $175k).

On the other band for some reason the Europeans are not that much more expensive. A friend bought a 2012 s600 for $150k.

I agree it is absolutely ridiculous, but what in Thailand what are you income, property, state, local, and sales taxes? In the states we end up "paying the piper" via those taxes rather than import duties.

The Thai people are obsessed with cars and especially sitting in traffic like nowhere else on the Planet !

Very goofy set of priorities them Thai people have - thank the Gods I'm only half Thai !

YMMV

The US pays incredibly little for cars in comparison to a lot of places in the world.
A 2012 BMW M5 starts at $230,000 in Australia.

Yep 230K in Australia and we get gouged on every other tax known to mankind. Stamp duty on my house at Christmas was $80,000, and our top marginal tax rate is 46% and cuts in at about $160K, but the lifestyle is great!!!!!!

And if you think that is impressive to buy I-tunes in Australia is more than double that of the USA despite you buying it online from a US Apple site, and to think the criminals once came here by boat, now they live in cyberspace!!!!!!

The last that I checked, these prices aren't too far off what the UK pays for Bimmers.

It's a joke, really.

You think Apple is bad
It’s literally cheaper to fly to the US to buy Adobe Creative Suite Master 6!
