I've had a number of memorable meals around the world over the years. However, I can never remember what we ate most of the time.
A few dishes I do recall to this day are: Da Fiore (Venice): Pumpkin risotto Alinea (Chicago): chocolate dessert made on a rubber mat at the table Guy Savoy (Paris): grapefruit sorbet La Mar Cebicheria Peruana (New York): Pisco Sour Takashi (New York): 3rd Stomach

Trattoria Papei in Siena, Italy.
Had the best meal of my life there 15 years ago. Nothing fancy - roasted rabbit and pappardelle with a duck ragout and a bottle of Rosso Toscano. The bill came out to $25 USD at the time. It opened my eyes to how much better an average Italian meal can be compared to what I was used to in the States. Went back last year and it was just as good. My daughter even loved it....

Several years back, I had an evening meal in Djibouti City and I didn't even know what I was consuming. I just prayed that I would wake up the next morning feeling okay. I told my friends, "if we survive this, we're never doing it again."

Some of the most memorable ones for me tried fried locusts and snake, one of the strangest was Baalut while in the Philippines. Must admit could not finish it, when a saw those little legs and beak, that was it.I Barfed the rest all over the floor much to the amusement to the on looking locals. And something in Thailand think they called them rice bugs, well they looked like giant white cockroaches. But again failed quite miserably,to eat its just the thought of eating a huge bug but managed one and must admit it did taste OK.And a huge fruit the size of a football, cannot remember what it was called but it bloody stunk like rotting socks,or a very bad toilet smell, but was bloody delicious to taste.

Durian fruit. We get it frozen locally, it does not smell as bad thawed but still very tasty.
Full marks for trying, it takes strong constitution to attempt some of the exotic asian delicacies and i am sure your effort was accepted in good faith. That solitary candle lit table on the beach looks sublime. Cook Islands on the list. I used to crave a good home steak as well but have seemingly replaced that with potato pancakes and maple syrup ;) Last edited by smak; 10 July 2013 at 05:09 AM.. Reason: XD |

I remember a family trip to Krakow long ago, staying at a castle converted to hotel.
Their restaurant served the best borsch soup.. It could have been the atmosphere, i recall grilled meat being served by staff off large broadswords in traditional dress. Very cool memory. |
