Sleeping at night with pre-owned purchase

I, like many others on here have OCD. I like everything just so. However, I also really want a GMT Master II Pepsi, and obviously this can only be acquired by buying pre-owned. My question is, how do you ensure you are not buying a lemon? Send it right off to RSC? It is hard for me to justify paying $6000 and not knowing it's history. That's why they have carfax reports for automobiles!

Any thoughts?

Buy from a trusted seller here on TRF and that will let you sleep soundly. Or go to a Rolex Service Center for an estimate for an overhaul. You will find out really fast if it is fake or a lemon.

True on the latter and if you don't live near one, ship it to them. It cost be $28 to send the SD registered mail to Dallas RCS and I got a cost estimate for service from them (part of which they check it against the stolen database) and if I chose not to have it serviced, it'd be $52 to send it back, so $80 to have it authenticated.

I would be much more comfortable buying from a trusted seller here than buying a car and depending on carfax.

As youre in UK you might not want to use a US trf seller so if in doubt take it to RSC but make sure you can get a refund from the seller first, ie not from ebay or a private sale, as they will seize it if its fake or stolen.

I can't disagree any more. Buying from a "trusted seller" does not guarantee a perfect experience with a watch. A seller may verify and guarantee the authenticity of a watch they're selling, but not likely any more than that. We can't pretend a watch with zero service history from a TRF seller is going to be working flawlessly. That's just having a little too much faith in people who aren't projecting that image themselves.

OP is asking about "buying a lemon," not buying a fake.

That's exactly what I would do - send it off to RSC. Besides, depending on how old the watch is, if you don't know the history it probably wouldn't hurt to get it checked out, aside from authenticating it.

Totally agree, I wouldn't trust anyone. I don't care who they say they are or who anyone else says they are! Buy the day/night GMTiic new instead! AM.

Some of the sellers on here take their reputations very seriously. Read reviews of the top 10 folks and buy with confidence. I've never had to question a purchase from TRF. Ever.

Sellers here...having said this my last two have come from Watch Chest ( ebay store)...they have been superb to deal with and are totally genuine...do your research on the seller and you will be fine. There is a lot of nonsense talked here about ebay. If you stick to the rules and pay through pay pal you are totally protected against fraud or theft.
