Minimalism qualify: Rolex

Do you believe Rolex qualifies in a minimalist's view of the world? If the view is that less is more, and this results in a profound appreciation of simplicity in that "less," where does Rolex fit in? Opinions requested.

Recently, I think Rolex has abandoned any minimalist tendency they had to begin with.

I think the air-king or non COSC 14060M fits the minimalists philosophy

Sure, Rolex definitely qualifies....or at least the Air King and the Explorer do.... and probably the ND Sub.

Anything with a date function needs to be looked at in the context if the date is "essential" to the function or form of the time-piece..

Now a Patek-Philliipe.......... No Way...

FWIW, My raison d'etre for buying the AK was it's minimalist appeal. I love it more daily!

Rolex does provide for the minimalist, but the brand is moving albeit slowly to more decorative models.

I think it depends on context in which you're speaking. In the overall world of watches, I think Rolex definitely qualifies as minimalist, regardless of recent changes. If you're speaking about Rolex exclusively, then the changes are not as minimalist, and it bothers some people. But take a look around, there's some loud, gaudy watches out there. I still think Rolex epitomizes the tool watch. Who else does it better?

I'd say the idea of living with one quality watch; no matter what brand; fits the minimalist lifestyle.

From the Book "Choosing Simplicity" By Linda Breen Pierce

The author states: "Simple living or voluntary simplicity are lifelong processes in which we turn loose of the quest for more wealth, status and power in favor of an authentic life of inner peace and fulfillment" ..."Living simply is not about rejecting material comforts in life... It means letting go of anything that interferes with a high quality life"

I say yes, a Rolex can qualify for a minimalist lifestyle. What could be more simple than a perpetual watch, no batteries to dispose of.

Just my opinion

Sean

Yes Rolex look minimalist, yes Rolex look like...maybe... oldfashioned watches. The question is why they still top selling brand? Because they're ROLEX!!! HELL with technology or innovation whatsoever!!!

I think Rolex has a basic clean design principle. I think in order to keep up with some industry trends Rolex has extended their line to include some bling.
However, unlike other watch companies where designs come and go Rolex realizes the strength of their classic watches and continues to produce those. I'm not sure if minimalist is the correct term though.

It's when your friends brag about their cars and you say, "I just drive a Dodge" and you stay silent, let them drone on and on, and then at the end of the night you smile and drive home in this:
