Buying with out papers... Thoughts?

Hey Guys-

I am finally coming to the world of owning a Rolex. I have found a watch that is local to me for sale, a friend had passed me the sellers info (he is an acquaintance of my buddy but not the original owner), and he actually has a posting on Craigslist as well. My problem is he does not have the papers...

He is willing to meet me at an AD, but as we all know, they will not authenticate it for me, even after offering to pay for it. Below is a link to the CL posting, any help/advice would be appreciated.

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/d...963752955.html

Thanks
Dave

Well in the real world the so called papers are nothing more than a warranty paper, and after the warranty well its just a bit of paper/or plastic.Today far too much enthuses is put of the so called papers with modern day Rolex. As with today's technology these are the easiest to fake, always buy the seller and condition of the watch. And if no service history have it serviced by RSC then you will have a service paper/card with all the watch details on and that will be a current two year warranty.

Since the ad states it was serviced, does he have the service paperwork?

Looks fine but there's no substitute for opening it up.

Authenticity looks okay from the pics but I think the asking price is too high. The hands have been replaced and do not match the dial and it's over-polished.

I'd just take it to an AD and have them authenticate it. Not having papers is not a big deal to me personally. I'd be more concerned about the condition of the watch.

Ask the AD to for appraisal of the watch for insurance purposes. They will gladly do that for a fee. I do that with any of my purchases.

I was searching info some time ago when I was buying my first one . . .

And a member his response was "I don't run around with my papers"

And he is correct

Just make sure you got a genuine Rolex and have it checked at an AD or at least by someone who knows these watches by heart.

Papers . . . if you are buying something special . . . vintage . . . plexi . . . Red . . . Double Red . . . it would be a big difference . . . and it would reflect in the price of course

But for example a 16610 . . . don't bother . . . millions out there . . . but mine is the most beautiful . . .

Regarding this Explorer II . . have it checked somehow . . . the price is according to me . . . very low for the shape that she' in !

So . . . watch out !

I also forgot to mention in my earlier reply... This is not the box that would have come with this watch originally. Box is newer.

Most Rolex watches for sale in the world do not have "papers".. However, even if it did you should never count on "papers" to ensure that the watch is authentic.. Find somebody who you trust to ensure you are getting the real deal..

I would consider the watch a 6.5 out of 10. Papers are nice to have to complete the package but not necessary. If you are unsure about the watch meet at an AD and have them look at it.

I agree with everyone here about 'it really Doesn't matter' however , as irrational as I know it to be , I have to have 'em.
