Sub C Dial Issue
I posted this comment on another thread which dropped off the radar overnight. I probably should have given it its own post, as some who may be interested may have missed it. I'd also really like to hear others' views on this. Here's my comment as it appeared earlier:
Being on the verge of buying a 114060, what's really bugging me now that I've noticed it is this: The 114060 has gained a space between the '300' and the 'm'. On all earlier references that I have found, there is no space. This is an issue because there is no space between the '1000' and the 'ft'. So it's inconsistent. In my business (publishing) this would be called a typo. Does this bother anyone else at all? Thanks. |

No. I owned the 114060 for a while and never noticed it and if I had it would not really bother me

I've noticed that also. When researching my 14060M I discovered that there were actually three variations with the dial printing in that area on that model, all with different spacing. I know that there is an old thread here about it, I'll try to dig it up for you.
If I remember correctly there was the first one where there was no space between the ft = and 300, another variation where there was a space only on one side of the two and a third variation which was equal space between the two. I have the third variation. Here's the link- https://www.rolexforums.com/showthre...ting+variation This thread covers the SD dial as well as some pics on the Sub dial variation. I wanted the variation that I bought, I didn't like the one that had un equal spacing, call me anal but it bugged me too. While I understand that your issue is with the extra space after the m, there seems to be many different variations with font and spacing in most of the dials out there. I wouldn't let it keep me from buying a certain model, I had just lucked out that mine had the spacing that I desired. Here's a pic of my 14060 dial.

Your dial has centered text and Rolex added the additional space to "center" the 2nd line along with the others, no?

Thanks Tim, and sorry in advance kauebm! I'm all for variant dials (no problem that the Milgauss GV has two differently spaced layouts even on their web page for the Milgauss GV), but inconsistent spacing on the same dial just smacks of sloppiness (at least to this former proofreader).

The space between the 0 and m makes the length of the 1000ft very close to 300 m. Thus, the = is close to centered under the submariner label. Without the space on the meter side it looks a little unbalanced to me. So to answer your question... No it doesn't bother me and I don't believe it was a typo. My guess is very little that comes out of the rolex factory is in error.

Dial font variations, including spacings, are nothing new
Although Jason (Jason71) has a Milgauss with 'imperfect' dial printing... http://www.rolexforums.com/showpost....17&postcount=8

No.
As long as the watch keeps time within spec, I do not "read" the dial or examine it for changes.

I don't even own a loupe. You can see the spacing I am talking about in most photos.

Let's not even get started that 1000ft is not equal to 300m. ;)

I honestly didn't notice that the black text was shifted to the left until I took some macro shots of the dial Rolex does a pretty good job though considering how many watches they crank-out every year. Here is another one of my watches. It actually has the word Caribbean misspelled as "CaRRibbean" on the dial.
