Was it the legacy, the way it looked, the reference to culture, to impress, or something else? For me it was the fact that I had an encounter with a Rolex in my youth and that began my fascination with timepieces. I finally bought one many years later to celebrate a certain achievement and to satiate my obsession with the brand.

I'd always wanted one and a few years ago I reached a milestone in my life. I marked it with an Exp II. Since then, I celebrated another accomplishment with SS/gold Daytona. Both watches have a deep meaning to me and I am reminded every time I put one on.

Plus, they are pretty.

Wifie bought mine for our 25th anniversary, With only 2 years of "HINTS" that a Rolex would be the greatest gift I could think of; She bought me a Sub LV,and it only cost me a 11 carat Aquamarine/Platinum ring..Good trade...Still on the fence on this one.

For me it was the look. I never really used to consider buying a Rolex and then I noticed a 'Smurf' in an AD's window and was imediately in love. Unfortunately I didn't know it was WG at the time or how much it cost. Still the seed was planted and within a few months I had bought a Sub C LV. Then I found TRF and I am now have a whole different appreciation of the brand.

I didn't know much about Rolex when I started looking into them, I knew their name and they were considered very nice watches. I was unfamiliar with all the models except for perhaps the Datejust and the Submariner (the Sub from watching bond movies). At the time I wore watches that took batteries (your fossils, seikos, timex, etc). I got tired of changing batteries when the batteries died so I started looking into other types of watches. I found Rolex and their mechanical movements and was hooked. I loved the idea of having this tiny mechanical masterpiece 'alive' on your wrist. I still love the idea! I looked at quite a few models but decided I liked the Submariner, since it seemed like a watch that could go with most anything. I preferred the cleaner look of the non-date. A nice hard-earned work bonus later, I had my Sub on its way to me. That was about 13 years ago.

Being born in 1960 I guess it has much to do with Lloyd Bridges Submariner he wore in the Sea-Hunt TV show. As well as the fact it was and is one of the most masculine watches a man can wear.
I also have lived on or near the sea my entire life and necessity dictated a water "proof" not "resistant" watch, that I could wear to work in the construction industry, unlike today where the Sub seems to be used as a fashion watch rather than what it was initially designed for in my opinion.

I never liked Rolex. Mainly due to all the Subs and so many fakes out there. The "Is it real?" Questions.

Then I needed a watch with GMT/ two time zones and a date. Once I laid eyes on the EXP2 I was in love even though it was a Rolex. Knowing it will last for decades and I won't see too many out there is just a perk.

Trying on a sub c at the AD while I was browsing Pams. I had no idea how much I would like it. It opened my eyes seeing it on my wrist. LOVE the oyster brushed bracelet.

Easy flippability.

Never liked Rolex. Kind of liked the Sub-C. Thought I would try one and could flip it with only a little loss if necessary. Turns out I love it. Great watch. Don't even mind the dreaded cyclops.

I can appreciate Rolex now.

Totally agree...I used to hate the brand (rich, undeserving college kids gave me my first impression...) but now love it in the extreme

Love diver watches and always wanted a Sub, but would never spend that money on a watch with that flimsy bracelet. The Sub-C changed the game so much for me that now sometimes i consider getting a 5 digit one with the bracelet i used to hate.
