DSSD buyer advice

I just purchased a DJ2 as a daily watch but, am looking to buy a DSSD as well. The DSSD would be mainly for weekends or really casual events with the family and friends. As such, it wouldn't get a lot of wear. Therefore, I wouldn't mind buying something a bit used and scratched if were cheaper; I'd prefer something from a trusted seller instead of some website. I also want to be able to sell the watch to turn it into cash should something else tickle my fancy in the next 2,3, or 4 years or I need some extra cash for some family expenses. If I don't need to sell it within the aforementioned timeframe, I'd like to put it towards something in Everose. Regardless, I want to be able to sell it for as close to I bought it as possible, especially since it won't be abused or even used much.

I see there are multiple variations and series' of the watch and prices going from 8k-10k for used pieces. I'd appreciate some advice as to what you'd go for, bearing in mind the above requirements. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Buy a complete set, in the best possible used condition you can,
For roughly $8.5k. Treat it well and sell it whenever you want.

First. You should only buy it because you want to wear it, nothing more or less.

Second. The best return will be on a watch that is in the best condition, period. The series of dials or case numbers isn't going to make the watch more valuable!

The DSSD is a fantastic watch, it's just not for everyone.......but I certainly enjoy wearing mine!!

Thanks for the advice. I was planning to pay about 1,000-1,200 USD when selling/flipping it. Is that reasonable in your view?

I'm not sure what you mean by "pay about 1,000-1,200 USD when selling/flipping it" - if you mean willing to lose that much value, then you certainly want an older DSSD that will not lose as much value as a 1-year-old DSSD.

Sorry I wasn't more clear. That's exactly what I meant. From your response, I assume that is potentially realistic as long as I stick to an older version. That being said, it then begs the question of buying a more beaten up version, which I would service and take care of, which would lose even less in value. Although that seems to contradict another poster's advice of buying the best possible condition (which would new BNIB to me or potentially very LNIB). The latter seems counterintuitive to me but, you're making sense to me...albeit being a newbie.

I think you're going to be hard pressed to find a real discount unless the watch has
a significant flaw - i.e. chip in crystal, massive ding, etc. If you can get into a good
example (full set) w/ normal wear and no polish for roughly the pricing I mentioned,
you're all good.

Buy a clean used one treat it right and you'll be fine

I heard from Finnish AD (RSC also) that they are not allowed to open DSSD even for simple regulating because the watch has to be pressure tested each time it is opened and they don't have the equipment to do 4000 m pressure test. Here in Finland DSSD has to be sent to Switzerland to regular service or regulating unlike other Rolexes.

Sounds like a service will be slow and expensive once I leave Switzerland and move back to the states.

Heres my .02
For $8500 you should be able to buy a very nice condition DSSD with box and papers...

You should wear it and enjoy it and not worry about a service until it starts to lose time or just stops, then send it in for service.

Chances are it will never need a service before you sell it and if you have taken care of it it should still be worth $7800-$8000

That was my train of thought when I bought mine 3 weeks ago

It's the same at my local AD in the UK; they can service any Rolex apart from the Sea Dwellers due to the extra pressure testing.

People forget about servicing costs when thinking about what they consider retained value over a period of time, but it makes quite a difference. I suspect the DSSD might be more expensive to service then some models as well.

My view, based on opinion rather than fact, is that the DSSD will struggle to match the other Rolex SS Sport watches for retained value as many Buyers will be put off by the size; despite the fact I think they are awesome watches, a lot seemed to get flipped within six months of ownership.

You could consider a recently serviced Sea Dweller 16600 which is less initial outlay, in some peoples view a nicer watch (I gave one so am biased, I also have small wrists), and is highly unlikely to lose any value. In the time period you are talking about, it won't need a service (assuming you do buy a recently serviced watch) so your only loss will be anything it costs you to advertise the watch for sale (which may actually be easily offset by rising values).

Values of course can't be guaranteed, but an SD is almost certainly going to do better than a newer DSSD, in my view.

Nope, most U.S. RSC's now have the pressure testing equipment on-site for the DSSD.

wear it. let the rolex price increases take care of you 'depreciation'

as rolex increase their prices, used values increase also.
