Timing Question - Your thoughts

I mentioned last week on the Forum that I'd acquired a 1960 Rolex "Precision" model in very nice condition. Wearing it revealed that it ran from 10 to 15 minutes fast a day. Forget COSC!! I took it to a watch repair place to get it timed. Got a call from same advising that they couldn't time it unless it was cleaned first. Appreciate your advice.

I agree, should probably undergo a complete tune up if it has not had one in the last 5 years.

Send it into BH or SF RSC and get a full estimate. Who knows what a watch of that age needs.

Welcome to TRF, Tom!

I suggest you get it serviced!

I found some links for you where you can see what's done at service.

For instance this one about regulating a Rolex watch.

Also, you might find it interesting that several kinds of lubrication oils are used to oils the various parts of the Rolex movt. (note, however, that some of the oils shown in the 4 charts have been exchanged for newer and even more efficient ones).

And here are some pics of the various watch parts and how they are serviced. Here are some further pics.

Please post a pic of your watch as it looks now, and later "after service pics"!

That would be awesome!

Tom
Lets get things perfectly straight here if your watch is running like you say 10 to 15 minutes a day fast. Then that amount of gain cannot be checked by regulation alone regulation is for seconds rather than minutes.Your watch must have another problem tangled hairspring for etc.Have it serviced then all should be fine those movements are quite bullet proof. And that movement is quite capable of running to the COSC spec, same could be said for any other movement any brand made in the last decade or so.

The watch repair place is right - it needs a service before any attempt is made at adjusting its accuracy.

Does it look like this?

This watch runs about 1.5 sec/day fast.
