The value of an older watch
My sis's best friend inherited a watch 10 years ago from an old boyfriend that she is no longer involved with. She has an older model explorer that she wanted to sell. I asked that she stay away from a pawn shop, and that I do not want her to get taken advantage of. I told her to look at ebay for a similar watch to determine an approximate value. The only problem is that the ones on ebay are not as old. Is there anyway to determine the approximate value of an older watch? Unfortunately my sis lives in New York, and I do not have the watch to find the model number.

I am also much better at snapping photos than her. If needed I can give her some advice and repost some better images. Thank you for looking.

Looks like a 1016 (1975-1989)- worth good money find the model #. An explorer would have to be in in rotten shape to be worth less than $2k, but a 1016? Google it! $5k+

The band looks to be in serious shape. The crystal looks like it's pretty scratched also. Looks like it could stand a trip to RSC before it's sold. Then you could command a better price.

Yea, I agree have the watch serviced first if you plan on selling that. Tell them to keep the dial and hands original. Then when you sell it, you can really fetch a nice premium from it. You can also get an appraisal done on the watch.

Have it serviced , make sure the dial and hands are original , and if you are looking for the most money you can get , dont restore the dial .

Err buddy Thurnau...as per your wrist shots...it would appear that watch is functional...
Please ask your sis's best friend...whether the Explorer that she has...is still keeping reasonably accurate time? Please advise. PLEASE DO NOT SEND IT FOR SERVICE 1st...most RSC would not want to accept older models for service repair... Err buddy Sparky...a Ref 1016 Explorer - would have to be in tip top shape + papers...in order to fetch those good $ nos. which you mentioned. |

If it's a 1016, all original, you will want minimum US$5k.

Lovely Explorer!
You could try out independant RSC's like RSC San Francisco. They'd probably love to service it. As stated, just make sure that the dial and hands are kept as they are now.

It was serviced about 5 years ago. I am waiting for more details. She said she knows that the crystal was replaced once (despite its bad condition). I do not know if the flash highlighted small scratches to make them appear deep. Whether they are deep or many hairline buffable scratches I will get some better pics. Other than that I will share some info as it comes in.
I personally would consider giving the watch back if it was mine, if it was passed down to a son with some history. I do not know why the ex-boyfriend gave it to her. Thanks for your help guys. |
