Is Mont Blanc the gold standard in pens?

I have been using a solid titanium embassy pen from http://www.countycomm.com/tipen.html. It is milled from a solid block of ti and will last longer than I. Provided I don't loose it! While not a designer pen, I have received more compliments on it than any Mont Blanc, Cartier etc. I have owned. It takes space pen refills which is very convenient. It can also be used as a weapon! Yet I bring it in and out of courthouses throughout the state without issue. I love it. It also comes in solid stainless and solid copper. All three are hefty instruments, but once used to the feel it is hard to write with a bic again!

Their rollerballs dry up very quickly and as mentioned above are difficult to write with at particular angles. You'll have to check that out for yourself at a store.

BTW Cross has moved most of its production to China. A former Cross employee posted about this around 2 years ago here in TRF.

I use Visconti Opera and Visconti Rembrandt with Schmidt ink and they work like a charm. I work in government so a true fountain pen, especially a MB would appear a little over the top.

They are affordable, and no one really recognizes them as a fine pen other than you.

They provide good service as I have had two pens refinished for $25/each.

I've had good luck with my Sailor, Waterman, Pelican, and Conklin pens.

Fountain Pens? Yes. They are the best writers out of the box. Consistent and reliable.

Rollerballs? No. Terrible. Scratchy Refills and lousy flow.

Ballpoint? Yes, but only their BOLD cartridges. Really nice.

The Mont Blanc Platinum/White Gold Pen wins all. Aluminum or Gold is too ordinary. A "gold pen", sounds plain to me

I love my Meisterstuck LeGrande Platinum BP it's a lot to pay when a $5-7 dollar pen writes better in some respects but damn if it isn't pretty to me, and I think that's what's important .... Buy what moves you. Here are my two most favorite non essential "things"

Has Mont Blanc always put a serial number on the pen? I have come across an older Meisterstuck that does not seem to have any numbers on it. Just curious if maybe it shouldnt or if it was broke and changed out for a cheap replacement. Thank you.

No, they did not. The older pens did not have serial numbers. I have some classics that have W Germany (pre-unification) and Germany (post-unification) without serial numbers.

I also find that for general everyday writing, Kaweco fountain pens do a fabulous job too :)
