For instance, a few weeks ago I was diving in the Philippines and the manager of the shop was a Polish gentleman who at first seemed a little standoffish. When I found out through the dive master where the manager was from, I said a few words in Polish to him and his face immediately lit up and gave me a huge smile. Needless to say, I received the VIP treatment after that.

In most places I've visited the locals appreciate it when you say simple words like "hello", "please", and "thank you" in their language, and they very much like it when you speak their language fluently or at least make it evident that you are trying to learn. It takes a little bit of effort but the reward is often great.

I have two young children and having them speak a few words of the local language often triggers a very friendly reaction from the local people wherever we travel, particularly in Thailand. I believe it has allowed my kids to feel welcome and truly appreciate people from different cultural backgrounds.
Couldn't agree more.

Wherever I travel to, I always make sure to learn the basics. Like you said, hello, how are you, excuse me, thank you, can go a really long way. If they see that you are at least attempting to speak their language, they will be many times more likely to want to help you out.

Don't know much about the american indians being a pale skin from the north pole, but werent they there first, speaking a variety of languages and dialects? The rest is a shifting tide between the two (I guess) "invading languages".
