Let's just enjoy what we've got...
The problem with many of us is we are always aspiring for the next watch....which sometimes makes us forget that we already have some superb time-pieces in our possession.
I'm not afraid to admit that I often find myself guilty of the above. I keep dreaming about the rhodium dial TT Daytona I shall own some day, but tend to forget that I am blessed with 2 beautiful and practical Rolex watches. So that's when I tell myself....forget the future....just enjoy what you've got for now.....be like the wifey who is so happy with her just one TT YM....she never even talks about another Rolex.....until she's truly ready for one. Guys, let's just enjoy what we have for now....the future will take care of itself and bring on surprises and the unexpected as time moves on. JJ

I enjoy what I have, I just also enjoy trying different watches. These watches are replaceable, they are not life and death and they sure don't define me. I just keep switching till I find one that I like, at least for today.

Well speaking for myself now, material things mean very little to me now.The most most important thing to me now is good health, without that you got nothing.

I'm going to throw a monkey wrench into your thinking, JJ. The aspiration for the next watch is merely symptomatic of our overall aspirations. If we didn't have aspirations and goals, we would never get ahead in life. There's always another mountain to climb, another river to cross, another watch to strive for.
If we didn't have those aspirations and goals, we would shrivel up and waste away. I have always been guided by the priniciple that there is always something over the next hill that would be interesting to see, do, or have. But I have to get over that hill first. So my goal is to get over that hill. And what do I find when I do? Most of the time I find things I like. But then on the other side of the valley is, guess what - another hill to climb. And I have to see what is over there. My greatest fear is that if I stop seeing that next hill, I will waste away to nothingness. And that is the most horrible thought of all. So, yes, there is that meteorite Daytona, or that JLC Master Perpetual out there somewhere. Will I be happy with them. Probably. Will I be satisfied with them. I hope not.

Good reply, Ed.
But the intention of my post was that we should also try and draw the line of contentment at some stage in our lives. Sure, we always should strive for more, but very often it so happens that whilst striving for that extra bit, we tend to forget (or take for granted) what we already have in our possession. You're right in many ways, but sometimes I think we should try to sit back on our laurels (and achievements) and relax a bit. JJ

Since he's already posted a lament for an extra millimeter on the ExpII, I can only imagine a TT Daytona will happen before JJ's winter returns.

Resurrecting an old thread.
Going to add a twist & look forward to comments. Have any of you been put in an awkward situation because of your Rolex? I was yesterday. Took my daughter on a school field trip and ended up talking to some of the other parent "drivers". Talk ended up on charity, etc, then about hard times, finances ( a bit ) and how the kids didn't get much for christmas, being a single parent ( not me) and how expensive kids are.... Well there I am sitting with them with my SUb on my wrist. I do spoil my daughter & wife too, but I do not need to be made to feel guilty about what I do have.

But did anyone notice? I had been wearing my Sub to the office for over a month before someone noticed it. The first comment was: 'it's a fake'. I told him to bet his month's salary and I would bring the receipt from the AD and all the other stuff. He reclined.
You’re question is as old as the first luxury item ever made. But we are who we are. I had to save long and hard for my Sub but that doesn’t show on the outside. As long as you don’t use your watch or any other high-end item just to impress others or to put them down I think it’s OK. Sometimes I get remarks like: “it’s easy for you, you earn enough money” but those people don’t know that I attended evening classes after work and put in the effort. It’s never been easy and it has nothing to do with luck either.

Good points. I do work hard for my money. I like to enjoy it. They go hand in hand.
I NEVER "flash" what I have. That is exactly why my original rolex did not have the cyclops. I don't think anyone noticed. but, I just felt uneasy.

Must be the caffeine slowly working its way into my system this morning, but I swear I could hear Crosby, Stills ,Nash and Young as I read JJ's thread starter.

As for the main post. I agree. I have been trying to get out of the "buying stage" and into the "relax and just enjoy" stage. But for me, I see prices going up that will never come back down. So to buy now seems like the thing to do. Case in point, I am soooooo happy I bought my TT blue sub early on. don't know if I would pay retail for it now. I think it around $7100, and it may go up again in Feb. Actually I probably would pay retail, but am happy I got mine a few price increases back. |
