What to do, advice requested

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if I can get some advice from the experts here on TRF. My name is Debbie and I have been a member of this forum for almost 5 years and a rolex fangirl for 26 years. I currently am sporting a 116234 Rhodium Roman, SS/WG. Love it!!

Now for the question:

A friend of mine's mother was given a Rolex about 25 years ago. It did not have a box or papers. He was not sure if it was real so we took it to a watch maker in Beverly Hills, Peter Schuler, who did authenticate it. He opened the back and it is real. I thought it was based on the weight, crystal, etc.. It is a 26mm ladies SS/YG datejust jubilee band, champagne face..

Here lies the problem. The watch needs a lot of work. About $800 worth. My friend nor his mother are not in the position to pay to fix it. His mother has terminal cancer, will never be able to wear it, and they just wants to sell the watch. It does not have any real sentimental value because it was given to her from someone she was employed by for a very short time.

I am seeking the advice of the experts here as to what to do with it. If I have posted this in the wrong place, I am sorry. i am not trying to sell it to any of you, I just am looking for advice because even though it is real there is no box and papers, so I don't know what to do. I know it is worth something even as is because it contains 18K gold. The watchmaker said that the band is in excellent condition, its the watch that needs the work.

Any assistance from the experts here would be appreciated it. I am just trying to help my friend and his mother.

Would look at for sale here and eBay etcetera for similar watches for comparison

A 25 year old TT ladies date that needs serviced won't bring in a lot and may not be that easy to sell

I know especially without a box or papers. That is one of the reasons I advised him against spending the money to get it fixed. Even though the jeweler will authenticate it when he fixes it. I will check both ebay and the classifieds here.

go get service at rolex service center maybe?

so that the rsc receipt can be a legit proof of the watch and you may sell it here or ebay or craiglist

Thanks, I can take it to the one in Beverly Hills, for an estimate. I just don't think they want to spend the money on it.

You could always try ebay. You have nothing to lose.

On ebay, if people pay top dollar for fakes, surely you will be able to sell a real Rolex for a good price.

Check out Bobswatches. They are located in Huntington Beach or visit them online. You'll be able to see the buy and sell prices or you can submit your information and they will call or email you with an estimate. A 26mm TT DJ is probably about $1k depending on condition.
