IWC Portuguese Chrono Classic
Gentlemen,
What are your thoughts on this watch? I was looking to add a JLC MUT Moon to my collection (AP Diver SS, PAM 372, Rolex GMT Master II LN) until I came across this model. I know JLC is a more prestigious brand but I think this particular IWC is more masculine, versatile and functional. Manufacturer Information • Reference IW390404 • Case Material stainless steel • Bracelet/Strap black alligator leather • Dial Color ardoise • Jewels 38 • Calibre 89361 • Mechanical chronograph movement • Self-winding • 68-hour power reserve when fully wound • Date display • Stopwatch function with hours, minutes and seconds • Hour and minute counters combined in a totalizer at 12 o’clock • Flyback function • Small hacking seconds • Sapphire glass, arched edge, antireflective coating on both sides • See-through sapphire-glass back • Water-resistant 3 bar • Case height 14.5 mm • Diameter 42 mm • Alligator leather strap by Santoni |

The ardoise dial in person looks amazing. I was always a fan of the Yacht Club but thought the dial was too dressy for the rubber strap. I was glad to see the 3904 come out with a little more refined dial. The 3714 is a classic but my only problem with that is the lack of a date.

This IWC looks nice but it probably wears very large. Apples & oranges vs the MUT Moon.

I've owned a 3714 and tried on a few 3904's. There's no question the 3904 wears larger and thicker, but I felt it was acceptable on my smaller 6.5" wrist. It is definitely a little more sporty than the 3714's IMHO. I loved the in-house movement, sapphire case back, and date (all of which my 3714 was lacking). I wasn't a fan of the price or the white dialed one. I mean silver hands on a white dial? What about the classic look of gold hands on a white dial like my 3714 had? I think they want to push people to getting the rose gold one which is absolutely beautiful.

I have the Portuguese pictured on the bottom right of the original post. Very nice watch for casual up to formal outings. I also have a JLC MUT Moon, which is a more formal, less sporty watch. They really are apples and oranges. Both great in their own way.

The IWC chrono classic is a really niece piece and much more reasonably sized than the yacht club. I have small wrists and tried it on and it wore nicely, IMO. As the name suggests, it is classically styled and I think it can be worn with a suit or jeans and a tee.
I found the grey dial quite hard to read in certain conditions. Also, the price is quite high - in the steel Daytona range. |

The JLC Moon is a little more formal to me...I'd go with the black dial IWC. I like that reference a lot, one of my fave IWCs.

I like the older model very much, the one you posted at the bottom right.

I prefer the 7750 Portuguese dial. It just looks simpler and more elegant.
