Sub Authenticity
Hey everyone nice to meet you all. Dad purchased both of these used at separate times. ( the black one is from bradley gough Fort Wayne Indiana here in town and gave me the black one as a gift. He bought the gold one some years ago and dont remember where from as i was young. I wouldn't even be questioning this other then the crown on the clasp on the black sub is a lot more flattened then on the gold one. Possibly just more used and abused I guess? Let me know what you all think. Thanks for the help

Both watches appear OK, and the reason for the coronet wear on the 16610 is just from over polishing (refinishing) to the clasp!
Welcome to TRF!

ok thanks for the help. Some day may have to get a new clasp as it drives me nuts how it is so polished down. Unless there is an easy way to swap the clasp around so the better looking one is on the black sub. Oh well either way glad to have got a beautiful watch! Thanks for the welcome

If you are not sending the watches back to Rolex to be polished be very careful who you do send them to. Every polisher who can polish jewelry thinks they can also handle Rolex watches. They usually just end up wearing down the case, embossed crown, and bezel.

You can indeed replace just that part but it's going to be tough to find that part and probably a little on the pricey side.

Those clasps are for sale here all the time in the "for sale:Rolex parts etc" section. You can get one for around $200. Send a message to Springer, he always has some good ones on hand.

I personally think replacing that clasp is a mistake. The crown is not that worn down at all. Take a look in the classifieds section on this site and you will see far worse on many pieces that are for sale. Plus the existing clasp has a date code stamp that corresponds to the manufacture date of the watch.
As far as the age of the two-tone Sub, it could be anywhere from late 1980's to late 1990's. You would need to remove the bracelet at the 6 o'clock position to observe the serial # and know for sure. |
