New rolex sub 14060 - stopped working after 4 months!

So I'm new to this forum, I bought a brand new rolex 14060 no date submariner from an AD in Toronto in February of this year. A few days ago, it completely stopped while I was wearing it all day. Winding (40+ spins) and tapping did not start the watch up again. I am really frustrated and not sure how to approach this AD. I don't think it's even reasonable for them to fix it as a rolex should not need a fix in 4 months but rather I think I'm entitled to a brand new watch or a refund. Any thoughts on how to approach this?

Sorry to hear this, and it's certainly not the norm. Things like this do occur though unfortunatley....
If a tap, or a light shake didn't get it started after a full 40 turn wind, then something is certainly not right.

As for a new watch, that will never happen I'm afraid. This is what the 2 year warranty that came with your watch covers.
Still, bad luck for certain, and I wish you a quick return of your watch!

just bring it to an RSC you wont need to pay anything except that you will not be able to have your watch with you for a few weeks..but i am quite sure they can rectify what was wrong inside..i doubt for a full exchange

Do you really mean 14060, or is it a 114060 (ceramic bezel).

Exactly why would you want and exchange? The watch is under warranty and will be working better with just a little time. 20 years from now you'll be looking at with great fondness and thinking of it as a brother who's stuck with you through thick and thin. Welcome and congratulations on your new watch and first post.

14060 or 114060?
Either way, if you bought from an AD it should be under warranty.
You can forget about getting a new watch. but once sent to RSC it will be as good as new.

14060 was replaced by the 14060M (I believe with the M series) which in 2012 was replaced by the 114060. It is really confusing as to why a two generation old Rolex would be sold as new? I can understand a couple of year old watch being sold as new but a seven, eight, or even 10 year old watch could require some sort of service prior to being sold as new, I would think. Or is it really not a 14060?

Reference number could indicate you bought a "new" watch that was manufactured several years ago. However, your purchase date started the full warranty period. IMHO, there is no practical way for that AD to find another new 14060, so repair is your only option.

Since it sat so long, it is possible a small bit of lint or microfiber filament had been wicking lubricant from a critical piece and that eventually caused a failure. The fix could be very simple by the RSC - the AD could send it in or you can undertake the shipping, etc.

You visit your AD with your Rolex and warranty card and explain what happened, they will send watch to Rolex for free warranty repair.

No chance for a new watch..

I won't get into "entitlements" as today everybody thinks that they are "entitled", although I might wonder why, out of all the people in the world, you believe that you fall onto that rarefied earth..

There is no magic inside a Rolex and upon a service by the Rolex Service Center your watch will be in better condition than it was when you first walked out the door with it. I sympathize with your frustration, but stuff does happen..

it is indeed a 14060, the sales lady said it was 2-3 years old but it was brand new when I bought it. I think when you buy a rolex and it fails in 5 months you are entitled to a new watch or a refund. My 20$ timex has been running for 10 years. The sales lady said 5-7 years until this would need servicing, this falls really short for what is expected from rolex. offering to fix a watch is great, but a rolex should not require any fixing within 5 months. To me, this is a lemon or a really old watch that was mis-represented by the AD.

Yes very frustrating....especially when you bought a high quality product like a Rolex watch. Actually it's frustrating buying anything new that stops working when it's new even if it was a $50 watch, it still the inconvenience of taking back to the store.
I feel for you...but try to tough it out for a few weeks and get it fixed.

It is actually quite surprising you found a 14060 hanging around, either way you should have had many years of worry free wearing and it sucks that you got one of the minority of the watches that stopped working for no good reason.
Many Many of us here have 10+ year old watches (non serviced) issue free

Just take back and let us know how they handle it

Realistically what would get more in a new watch? Potentially another watch that has sat in a store room somewhere for a couple of years. A good service and it will be fine. It could be something simple like a broken main spring which could happen at any time.

A $20 timex is a cheap quartz watch. Not a mechanical masterpiece made up of over 150 parts in the movement alone.

If you bought a car and it had an issue after 5 months that could be fixed reasonably easily do you think they would just hand over a new one?

This could happen to anyone and I think you were just unlucky but they will make it right. Good luck.

Your Timex is nothing more than a simple electrical board with a battery. A mechanical movement is quite a bit more complex.

Unfortunately complexity also means failures. It's not the norm but it's unavoidable. Best thing is to contact the AD right away and let them look at it. At the very least you're covered by the Rolex warranty and will have it repaired at no charge.

Maybe you should stick to Timex...

Rolex makes 1m+ watches a year and while they have some of the best quality controls in place sometimes a watch isnt perfect. A 2-3 year old watch that is NIB isnt that old. Just send it in for service and you should have it back in no time for many years of enjoyment.

I had the crown fall off one of my APs. I wasnt happy with that happening to a new watch but AP's service was amazing in getting it resolved. They finished the watch ahead of schedule, gave me a nice gift and even extended my warranty for 2 more years for a total of 5.

Watches are machines that require service and can break. Its what the company does in times of service that forms my opinon of the brand.

They stopped making 14060's about 89/90, give or take…

So if it indeed a 14060, it is NOT 2 or 3 Years old…!!!

Now a 14060M is another story...

That's not so. They BEGAN making the 14060 in ~ 1990. The 14060M was introduced sometime after 2000.

The 14060 replaced the 5513 in ~ 1990.

Any mechanical thing can fail. I know it's frustrating but it'll be fixed under warranty and you'll get a free service out of it.

I agree that if after 1-2 years something fails, fine.. fix it and give it back. But a watch that breaks within a few months and all the AD will do is take my watch for a month without compensation is not really acceptable. I can't really accept "tough luck" with such an expensive watch. If my BMW would break down, I would at least get a car to replace it while it is being fixed.

Well, sorry but that's how it works. It will go to Rolex Service Center where they will examine and assess the issue & then repair it and send it back to you. They will not dispose of your watch and give you a new one.

You've got a few choices:

* Demand a new watch and if they don't provide one, sue them. You may win the case, though that's by no means a certainty.

* Take the watch in and be both reasonable and "sob storyish". They may well offer you something that will made you happy.

* Take the watch in and just wait for a returned working watch.

* The above and sell it when it's back.

* Buy another nice watch for spare.

* Buy a completely different watch.

That sort of thing. It's your move.

Yeah, sue them! (for what? selling you a mechanical watch?) How do you know that it didn't break due to rough handling? Maybe you dropped it.. Seriously though, why are you so special? You bought a mechanical watch that needs service very soon after purchase. Ok, that sucks. Be a man and deal with it, it's under warranty. Their obligation to to fix it at no charge and they will.

I think you need to man up, stop the whining, send the watch in for service under the warranty and move on. When you get it back, either sell it or enjoy it, the choice is yours.

I don't know the consumer protection laws in Canada. In USA, your entitlement is clear - unless the sale has a free return period then you are entitled to the warranties offered by seller & manufacturer.

For $750K supercar, a Rolex or a Timex, the rules are the same...
