Yes has 18ct hallmark for sure, short production run I believe as the waterproof crown system took over, it proved far more practical, reliable and serviceable. This system was indeed waterproof when it left the factory making it rolexes first waterproof watch but failed after a few years. As you stated it was generally sold to the Asian markets to solve the problem of steel dials rusting quickly in such high humidity environments. I believe the engine turned dial I have is rarer than the porcelain dial as most rusted in these environments once the waterproofing inevitably failed from worn threads. Interesting piece of history IMHO.

Cheers it's a special one to me, never seen another with steel dial to be honest. I bought a trench strap for it, but have not worn it, I live in a beach suburb and worry about salty humid air and the dial, I keep it in a airtight container with drying agent to honest and just look at it from time to time cheers.

Well yes most were sold in the Asian markets perhaps they were 18Ct the English ones were mostly 15Ct.The only ones I have seen were porcelain even those now are like hens teeth so your dial must be quite really rare. And not like the today's quoted modern day Rolex by many on forum as being rare, they have always got to make me smile.
