Musings on Basel and vintage
So...lots of speculation lately about what is in store. One that keeps popping up is a tribute to the Explorer-II with an orange 24-hr hand. I was just reading through one of Mike's old posts about the white-dial GMT that was made for Pan Am execs--that is one really cool watch.
So my question: who would like to see Rolex re-release some of these great vintage pieces, except with modern upgrades? I personally would love a white-dial Pepsi GMT-II (though no ceramic). Are y'all with me? Who thinks this would dilute the value and collectibility of the true vintage pieces?

I'd love to see a modern Daytona 6263.
Or and SD exactly like the one we have now, just with a DOMED sapphire crystal to give it the "vintage plexi crystal" look of the 1665.

I'm with ya. I'm hoping for an orange hand explorer too.

I would love it and I don't think it would impact the value of the collectables at all.

An automatic 6263 would be the same as entering nirvana, Valhalla or some other state or place of rapture!

The Domed SD sounds interesting, but I'd prefer if they didn't put the CRB into the SD

I guess I'm of two minds here. I would love to see a re-introduction of the orange hand EXP II--with maxi-dial, etc...... Trying to duplicate the great vintage pieces of old however (RED writing etc..) is something I'm not sure about. I WOULD be all over a matt maxi dial though!!
As to influencing the value of the vintage plastics?....Naw. Those are finite resources and a part of a great history...nothing can take away from that. |

A new 6263 would be incredible. I doubt it would happen, but I hope I'm wrong.

I would love to see the above two mentioned watches be released at Basel '08. It could get no better. We'll know in a few days.

i'm not a big fan of revivals. there is some unique quality that makes these old watches the beautiful classics they are, and that should be left alone.
i think the time is better spent on creating new pieces for us to enjoy that will grow to become the classics of tomorrow. after all, you can't take away the heritage and tradition that exists today, that will be a part of every watch rolex creates, the great ones and even the not so great ones. |

Actually, I believe Rolex WILL eventually install domed crystals on ALL Rolex watches.
Because isince year 2000, the current DD's already have a (slightly) domed sapphire crystal (even though that crystal has the cyclops). So it IS possible! Now, let's take a "historic" example: Previously, the concealed clasp ("Crown Clasp") was reserved for the DD's on a President bracelet and the YG DJ's on a Jubilee bracelet. Now, the STEEL and TT DJ's come on a Jubilee bracelet with Crown Clasp. I could very well imagine the domed sapphire, currently reserved for the DD only, being introduced on the DJ soon and on all other Rolex models, eventually.

I for one don't really want to see an Orange hand Explorer II released as it will mean another few grand I've got to spend
As for vintage values the only possible effect would be positive, as I think it may get others interested in the vintage pieces, which would then push prices up not down. All complete speculation, but what the hell. Mark. |

Mark: I share your angst on this one. Either a white-dial Pepsi GMT or an orange-hand Explorer would really have me rethinking the completeness of my collection. Although I would want neither with an oversized case or ceramic bezel.

Domed crystals with anti-glare on the inside are a must. They add so much more dimension and character to the dial and the watch overall.
