Modern Rolex watches utilize 18k (.750) gold, however Rolex did produce gold plated (20 micron thick) steel watches as recently as the late 197Os. The 1500 series did have available gold plated heads with gold plated Oyster bracelets. Over the years I had a few of these in my possession and would not recommend as a daily use watch. Rolex also produced numerous 14K and steel/14k watches in the past.

There are tons of gold filled vintage rolex watches floating around. 30s, 40s etc.

I guess what my question is would my 1998 rolex be 18 karat?
And why would the jewerly store I bought it from sell my watch as the wrong year. They said it was a 2001 but the guys here said it is a 1998.

Here is one 1550 14k gold plated from 70's. It came with the also GP band which I found to b flimsy despite minimal stretch.

The only gold plated Rolex watches were sold back in the 70's. A '98 would not be plated.

And these are 14k plated, not 18k.

5502, 5506, and 5520 are all gold-plated Air-King models. They also made a 9k solid gold version of the 5500. By the mid-80's I believe Rolex had finally abandoned all gold under 18k.

I'm curious, does your 1024 have any gold on the bottom of the lugs? Seiko made some "gold capped" models which literally only had gold on the top of the case, not on the underside. But their capped models used thicker gold than the plated/filled ones.

Plated and filled two different things. Rolex did shells at one time.

Yeah, I think Seiko did all three methods possibly concurrently. The capped ones have held up the best over the years imho
