In my opinion, to be a collector, one must have a great deal of knowledge about the item bring collected. I mean history, movement, and other technical information. Also, a collector should have a direction of collecting based on what interests that collector. For example, collecting stamps isn't really collecting unless you know the specifics (or try to search for it) and also know what kind of stamps you should be seeking. Sorry about the long post, but I'm merely a humble enthusiast.

I suppose according to the definition of collector : " A person who collects things of a specific type, professionally or as a hobby". Then I am one. However, I think I fall more along the lines of enthusiast. I want a small collection, all will be ones I covet & for my own pleasure.

The number of watches you own and how long you have had your watches determine if you are a collector. There are flippers who constantly seek that "high" of getting a different watch and selling it for a different watch. I don't consider these people as collectors, but as enthusiasts.
However by the time you have 8-10 Swiss watches in your collection, other watch enthusiasts and ADs will consider you a collector. |

I tend to equate collecting with focus. It can be divers, GMTs, Chronos etc... As long as there is a theme.
