Date window off centre

Hi all,

I have just bought another watch, a DJ Turnograph with April/14 date so newly bought this year. It wasn't until I got home and looked at the watch straight on and noticed that the date window in the crystal is off centre. So to see the date exactly in the middle of the window, I have to angle my wrist forward. I checked it against my other DJ and that one is dead centre. I have spoken to the shop I bought it from and they are gong to look at it but I was wondering if anyone has ever seen this. As its a new watch I'm just surprised Rolex would sell it like this.

Chris

I'm often in the "don't worry about small imperfections" camp, but in this case, that would bother me. I'd be surprised if your AD and Rolex don't take care of you. The cyclops is just glued on, after all. Good luck!

Good luck

Warranty item for sure and your AD's Rolex watchmaker can put a new crystal on in a few minutes, pressure test, and have it right back to you.

Always look over a high ticket item thoroughly. Rolex makes nearly a million watches a year so not every one will be perfect. Defects happen, luckily yours is an easy fix.

I'd be heading to Rolex for a crystal replacement especially if it's still under Waranty
That would bother me tithe point of sleepless nights until the issue was fixed.
I'd go as far as saying if it were me and I had to I'd get a new crystal and pay for it
At $280 it would be worth it or me

you won't need to replace the crystal. Uninstall first then reinstall with a new gasket and it's complete. 45 min job with the right tools and pressure test.

Thanks for all your input, I just wanted to know it's not just me. Obviously I should have spent a bit more time going over it but I got caught up in my own excitement at getting this model I've been after. I'm taking it back on Sat as I said, I'll repost the outcome. C

That would bug the heck out of me. I understand about getting caught up in the moment though. You can never take too much time or look too close at one prior to purchase in my opinion. When I bought my Sub I went back to the AD three times, used magnifying reading glasses, had a little set of notes of all that I wanted to check... anal, you bet I was but when I got it home it was already inspected at length by the person who it meant the most to and who would look at it closer than anyone ever would... me.
This should be a very easy fix by either rotating the crystal just a bit or by a crystal replacement. Please keep us posted. Don't forget to have them pressure test before you take it back!
Lovely watch BTW, I always liked the look of the TOG!

Yep, needs to be fixed. Beautiful watch BTW.

Rotating the crystal would put the LEC off center, unless the LEC is already off center due to this. Can you see any of the AR coating exposed or does the magnifier look to be aligned with the AR coating? If it is my guess is the LEC is probably over a tad towards 5 o'clock in which case rotating the crystal would fix it.

Yep, just checked LEC and its slightly off to the 5'o clock position. Its off by the same margin as the cyclops. My question now is WHY? Why god of rolex WHY?
And thanks again for the advice. I shall get them to adjust crystal, ask for new gasket and get pressure tested.
On a side note, I rang Rolex St. James and guy there said they probably wouldn't do it until it's time for a service because they wouldn't want to let the air get at it???

By the looks of that Cyclops rotating the crystal will probably not fix the issue. it looks like Cyclops was glued on really not straight. If under warranty I would demand a crystal replacement. Definitely a defect!

That's absurd! A statement like that is typically my signal to ask for someone else to help me.

Thats really quite a bit off. Glad you're going to pursue this. And don't listen to the guy at Rolex St.James. He isn't the one that just spent a lot of money buying a watch. You should be able to enjoy it without reservation. :-)

I'd let it run for a few weeks to see if there was anything else happening mechanically that you'd want adjusted. Like accuracy, date change, other issues...

Like someone said, a Monday watch maybe

As for the cyclops, since you've verified the LEC is also off a bit then it should be a slight jog of the crystal clockwise by less than a mm.

As for this phenomenon truly affecting us, let's agree that 99.99% of the time we are looking at our watches at an angle and seldom straight on. This pic has a properly adjusted cycloptic crystal but you'd think not
