3130 vs 3186

My first Rolex collection date is getting closer (my 40th in a couple of weeks). My deposit is paid and the AD is holding a brand new 114060 and a brand new 116710LN for me.

I am still undecided between the two and will make my decision on the day after trying them both on again and probably spending hours debating the relative benefits while my wife loses patience.

Meanwhile I have probably read every review, thread, comparison etc of the two and I am drawing up a list of pros and cons for both (PCLs currently sits on both lists for the GMT!).

However, I have not found anything comparing the two movements. I know the GMT has the date and GMT complication and the Sub is more straightforward, but I was wondering which of the two was the most accurate / best timekeeper.

Intuitively I would say the 3130 should keep better time as it has less going on. However, most reviews of the GMT rave about the accuracy of the 3186.

Thoughts?

You can also check out the 216570 with the 3187 movement (and no PCL)

Stop it! The last thing I need right now is another option in the mix! I know that I will end up with both the sub and the GMT one day anyway, it's just a question of which one to start off my collection (and keep as a milestone birthday treat).

I also need a DJii. And an Explorer 1.

And a Platona.

And a few others....

If 116600 was one of your choices, I'd go with it. Since it isn't I'd choose 116710. Good luck in your purchase!

I agree about 116600 but it is out of my price range. I am pushing my luck as it is, if I upgraded the purchase to the 116600 I think the mrs would kick me out!

I posted a similar question yesterday about accuracy from one movement vs. another. Apparently there is none.

Good luck with your decision

Forget any any consideration of movement...its a 'red herring". Just buy the piece you love. Your over thinking this - Its a Rolex ...'Nuff said.

There is nothing to compare as to timekeeping. They both can be regulated to keep the exact same "accuracy".

If your watch is 2 seconds off a day, or 5 seconds off a day, it isn't because you got the wrong movement, it's because one is regulated better than the other - it's a half hour job to change.

Course I'm over thinking it - I hang around this forum! Normal people would just pick one and wear it, not obsess over every detail!

Sounds like reliability of movement is one less factor to differentiate them then. Thanks for all the feedback.

Decisions decisions.....

As the mvmnt is not an issue, make a list of the pros and cons of each and whichever scores higher that's the one... I mean the first one.

it may only take 1/2 hr to make the adjustment for some folks who can do it themselves but my ad has a backlog of work & certainly isn't going to jump me to the head of the line.

As already said, all movements can indeed be regulated for accuracy. Regardless.....maybe it was just the luck of the draw, but I have had two Rolexes with 3186 so far and both are the most accurate I've had. I had an M serial EXPII (116570) that was +1 s/day. My latest, a new GMTII (116710LN) is so far averaging < +1 s/day.
