16 YR Teenager - What model?

I am looking to get my 16 year old a Rolex for her birthday. Help me ladies.

not too much, no diamonds, but simple and elegant.

I am thinking midsize (31mm) - she has already said she would not wear larger one like 36 mm. Her mom has 31 mm in diamond dial.

1. What about the Oyster bracelet with Rhodium Floral? (she does not like pink, so out, or choc). I like it, but will a teen? I figure she can always swap the dial out down the road for silver, blue, black, with sticks or Romans? Seems modern to me.

2. Traditional, fluted WG bezel, sticks or Romans, in silver or white, maybe black.

Thoughts? I think the No. 2 would be something she would wear to fancy dress up events, but I think No. 1 is cool? What do I know as a DAD.

I like the floral, and I'm sure many girls her age would--though some would not. I think the datejust and jubilee is too old. A smooth bezel is probably the way to go regardless of what you choose

If I can only choose out of the 2 (as shown in your pic), i'd go for the 1st. It's a bit more chic for a teen. And the 2nd is a bit too "old" for her (though yes yes, a classic)..

If I can choose for you from the site, i'd go for 177200 in blue dial.
Why? Cos' there's a splash of electric/cool blue to add a bit of playfulness there. And it doesn't scream ROLEX with its no-cyclops.

And btw,I think you're a cool dad for wanting to get your daughter a head start in horology..

I would choose smooth bezel, oyster bracelet. Keep it simple. At her age she'll be trying to figure out her style & because of this, the only choice I would advise, is a stick dial. This combination isn't too mature nore is it too young or trendy. If she goes to college or even gets her 1st job, will compliment her choices as she ages. I would stay away from the flower dial (no offence to those that have it, I don't like it, & I wouldn't have chosen it had I been 16). I would stick with black,silver, white or blue. Check her wardrobe. What colour does she wear a lot of? If I were to choose, even though blue is my favourite colour, I would choose silver. There isnt a colour in her wardrobe it wont match. And silver jewelry is very popular, she may like the silver dial because of this too. And yes, she can change out her dial at her 1st service which should be after she finishes college. LOL Then she can put what she wants. LOL

And I was nervous giving my almost 40 year old wife a rolex.

I am with everyone that says get her something less expensive. Take her to Macy's and let her have her pick. It will cost you far less money and she will love it even more.

May I add that going subtle is a good idea in so many ways. As Judy says, shes still figuring out her style which will surely be changing every other month at 16. Id say a 36mm dj oyster bezell with a white or blue dial and roman hour markers. The 116200. If thats to big they make the same style in a smaller size.

Id like to also add that depending on where you live, a Rolex on a 16 year old may come across very spoiled looking. I had my first Rolex at 17 and got loads of haters from it in high school. This however was in 2007 when watches were very out of style ( to teenagers)

Without knowing more about your kid, it's hard to make a good suggestion. If I were picking for a generic 16 year old, I would go with the traditional fluted in either ss/wg or two-tone if she wears yellow gold jewelry.

It's the most versatile choice, it will be a watch that is appropriate for all situations for her whole life, and one she could even hand down to her daughter or even a son if she winds up having no daughters of her own. I dunno, I always like to think of legacy. Imagine her passing it down to your grandson when he is 16....

On the other hand, if she is super "girly" that floral with an oyster bracelet is very young and sporty. It reads very tennis-court-at-the-country-club to me (which is a good thing in my book... Just a completely different vibe).

I just turned 17 when I graduated High School and my father gave me my 1st watch, a beautiful 16800 which didn't leave my wrist for over twenty years. I'm glad my dad was the kind of man who didn't put much stock in a strangers opinion. I think you can't go wrong with either choice. They are both beautiful watches.

None of us know this family on a personal level. We don't know if 16 is a rite of passage, cultural, perhaps the kid has been ill & she made it to 16. We have no clue. If the OP wants to buy his daughter a Rolex for her 16 th, let him. Or, she might just be spoiled. It's his wallet.
He knows his family best. He's asked for help in trying to clear the mist about which one to buy.

AAK: Forgot to mention if they made a champagne dial in the 31mm, I would choose between that and the silver. I wear both colours of jewelry, beads etc & I would buy silver.

i think everyone's cautionary statements are coming from a very caring place, but i think there's nothing wrong with giving a great watch to a younger person.

I do think it's interesting that she expressed an interest in such a small watch, as women's watch sizes have trended up recently.

I think a 31mm Rolex for a 16 year old is a great idea for a birthday present.

Have a look at the SS DJ with white dial romans and smooth bezel.
