First of all, congrats to OP and his daughter. Good for him to be able to provide for his child like this and her maturity to receive such a gift.
I don't understand all the hate about getting a rolex. The MSRP for that watch is about US$ 6,200. That is a lot cheaper than a beater car that many people will have no problem buying their child once they got their license at age 16. That watch will be remembered by her for the rest of her life. My parents bought me a Seiko when I was 14. I still have it even though water gets in easy but I kept it for sentimental reasons. IMO, a rolex will last a lot longer that a car. Grant it, a rolex is a piece of jewellery. Would people question OP if he spends 6k on a diamond pendant or earrings? I would be more worried about my kid driving at 16 than wearing a rolex when the setting is right. My pick? Floral. |

I agree. I went to an international school and several of my classmates (early/mid-teens) had Rolex and Omega watches. I don't recall any issues whatsoever.

Everyone can have their own opinion on this subject and here's mine. Both of my brothers got their first Rolex at 14. One still has it and wears it every day and is now 38. The other sold it 10 years ago after having it for 10 years to get a different model. I was late to the game and got my first as a college graduation present. It all depends on how you raise your children and the values you instill in them. Maybe she will appreciate and cherish her watch like many of us TRF members do. It doesn't mean she is spoiled, the OP wants his family to enjoy the fruits of his labor, so let him. And as long as its insured, if something does happen then no harm done.
With all that being said, go for floral dial or maybe one of the new Oyster Perpetual models like the purple dial. Air King with pink numbers is also a good choice. Good luck and post wrist shots when she receives it!

Buy her a DSSD. When she says it's too big reply with "well, we can't return it so I guess I'll just have to wear it." That's a shame.....a real shame.....

I think buying a rolex to your 16 years old daughter is a great idea. I had my first rolex as a teenager, it still works great, and it now has over 36 years of memories... I am 47. I don't wear it anymore, but my wife does, I actually just gave it to her so I could buy a new one.
It is an Airking all steel with a white face, no date. A classic. I love both your choices. The floral design would be my first choice. Which ever you buy, I am sure she will treasure it always. Cheers. |

True...if she's wearing a Rolex, she's not driving a $6k beater. Probably something European

To OP- Can i suggest the air king? I think there might be a model with pink sticks. It is a really nice size, and not too much bling with the brushed center links. |

A lot depends where you live. There are areas not too far from where I live were your daughter could soon have that watch " taxed " ! That's Manchester speak for being mugged.

Have read all the thread and predictable responses and I guess we all get to have an opinion, I loved my Seiko Duo (Analogue and digital) my parents gave me when I was probably 12, it was certainly fancy I thought at the time I cherished that watch, I got a lovely Omega DeVille when I was 21 I cherished it as well. There may be more credence to those that were given such a lovely gift at 16,18 etc will value it for ever it comes down to the individual. If buying new Judy's choice is the right one a basic sliver or white dial smooth bezel and all SS makes sense.
What surprises me a little, is nobody has suggested a more vintage piece, an earlier OP or date, at least that way a lot of kids her age will assume it was a family hand me down and not give her a hard time about daddy buying her an expensive new watch.

My concern would be another teen stealing it or damaging it. Not everyone will be thrilled for her. Perhaps if she wore it to church or special outings it would be fine. However, as an everyday watch ... I don't think so.

===> My original suggestion applies. See my 1st post. Are we done with internet child rearing 101? I'm sure the OP has probably checked out a long time ago. Just thought I would break down the very 1st post. No where does he ask if is a good idea to buy a teen a rolex or when is it a ligitimate time to buy i.e.: college grad. We should probably end the madness. He knows his neighborhood, he knows his lifestyle, their acquaintances, her school friends, & he knows her. |

Thanks all. She rejected the idea of a rolex, as I think she thought it would be too flashy. Oh, and for those thinking daddy would give her a Porsche, sorry, i gave her a hand-me-down Chevy Tahoe with over 100K miles on it. I guess she will get a rolex after college.
Cheers! |

Exactly. Too much judgment going on in this thread.
QUOTE=vitalsignsrn;5398376]None of us know this family on a personal level. We don't know if 16 is a rite of passage, cultural, perhaps the kid has been ill & she made it to 16. We have no clue. If the OP wants to buy his daughter a Rolex for her 16 th, let him. Or, she might just be spoiled. It's his wallet. He knows his family best. He's asked for help in trying to clear the mist about which one to buy. Good Luck... AAK: Forgot to mention if they made a champagne dial in the 31mm, I would choose between that and the silver. I wear both colours of jewelry, beads etc & I would buy silver.[/QUOTE] |

I got my first at 18! (I'm only 21 now). Coincidentally it was a brand new 36mm Datejust on jubilee. From personal experience, OYSTER! I second the smooth bezel oyster 31mm but go with a plainer dial, Romans or baton in white or rhodium would be perfect. The floral would be quickly outgrown. A more traditional watch would be appreciated and worn, if not now then in the future. Most young people with nice watches given as gifts are of the "I wear it only to family parties" mentality. That will change I'm sure as they get into the working world, so get something timeless, i.e. not floral.
Edit: Didn't see the update post. |

Rolex? Not yet. Wait until she's 21. But I would not put her in Anne Klein or Michael Kors or any of that stuff, either. I would get her a nice Tissot or Oris or something of that sort...

Nobody advocated that the child receive "daddy issues"... Further, material things and values are not mutually exclusive. When I have kids I hope I can provide them with both. In this case she just wasn't interested in owning a Rolex - that's her personal preference, not a measure of her sensibility.
