I travel a lot and have been asked on occasion to remove my watches, so since getting my first Rolex I always take it off and put it in my hand luggage before going through security. Simple and Easy and no risk.
I do this in case they ever did ask me to take it off. If they asked me and my hand luggage had already gone through I would have to put it in a tray and I wouldn't like that.

I always travel with my Rolex on, no matter where I am going and this is the only time when I am really thoughtful of it's security.

Not an issue, as others have said.

I only travel about a half dozen times a year but I've always just thrown mine into the bin with my shoes. But now this post has me worried. At what point are the watches getting stolen?

I fly every week and have Global Entry. Watch goes in my carry on before security.

This was previously mentioned, but I put my watch into my carry-on before and make sure few people get between me and my bag. lace-less shoes helps me get through quick too.
