Used my sub today to time how long I was at the courthouse paying a fix-it ticket.

Tool means they have a specific use and function to accomplish said task. The rest is entirely up to the wearer. You wear the watch not the other way round.

Sorry the BLNR is out of focus... The camera was in awe from the multiple thousands of pounds of thrust available from the Pratt and Whitney. Perspective is off, but I can "almost" stand up inside the engine inlet and not hit my head... Amazing technology.

Man your Black Bay reminds me of my Bay that I sold a few weeks ago. I'm now missing mine. :(. For me my g shock has always been my tool watch. It is very tough, water resistant, yet very inexpensive.

As an instructor, I fire several thousand rounds per month. I have had Subs for two decades. No problems - ever. Dings, yes. Scratches, yes. Keeps ticking. My first Sub fought 2 wars, Iraq and Agfanistan, but it has never visited a RSC.
The DSSD saw some excitement in Israel this year. Some training, but nothing I would consider it "battle tested". Is is a tool watch? A couple more wars and we will see. |

Would have to agree that Rolex appear to have swung away from the functional tool watch, towards the more high viz jewellery items, the Explorer and the some of the Sub/SD series being the last (just about) vestiges of that era. A pity in some ways, though Rolex clearly know what they are doing and what works for them I suppose. Tudor still strikes out at bit though and they are certainly very nice watches for the money!

can't beat vintage midsize Rolex for everyday use. Under the radar, same great reliable movements, just a smaller case and twin locked instead of Trip, which makes no big difference on land.
the black bay is great too, but I'd still be wearing my Sub everytime I wasn't doing anything shy of working on my vehicle. I do wear my watches on straps most of the time to avoid wear on my band though. my daily wearer is almost a 43 year old watch and my other one is almost 52 years old. I'm sure both have been worn plenty throughout their lifetimes and they're both ready for another 50-100 years. |

Wearing a watch to do routine daily activities don't make it a tool watch, unless of course these activities are what the watch was designed for.

With all due respect and no offense but in my opinion to say a modern rolex sub or gmt is not a tool watch is misplaced and not accurate.
Just because you choose not to use it in that fashion defines it for your own use not the rest of the world. It is more than adequate for virtually any use and because some people don't want dings or life's scars on their watch means to me they are treating it like a luxury item, but, do not minimize it's value to those of us who do wear them for everything we do. You certainly can have your own opinion but to say it is not a tool for it's intended purpose, and I look to the sub as a dive watch, is simply factually incorrect. |

Whether your Rolex is a tool or a jewel is up to you and really is not a function of cost. And respectfully, once again a thread that renews my hope that Tudor gets its own, 'Tudor General Discussion' sooner than later on TRF - this is at least the third thread in a week with this suggestion, direct and indirect, that Tudor is somehow the emerging tool whilst the Rolex moves away from that towards luxury, and I'm tired of that baloney sandwich.
Pic is an out-of-town assignment at Mardi-Gras as I have a part-time LE gig; and when I inevitably get dispatched to a fight I don't yank off my Exp II and throw on my G-Shock because I don't own a Casio or a Tudor for that matter. |
