Would appreciate expert opinions on this 1680 dial
Hello,
I picked up this 1978 White 1680 last week. I received it yesterday and upon inspection I noticed that there is some dial discoloration/surface inconsistency. The seller did not mention this in his description, and I can return the watch. I was just curious to know what do the experts think about this. Water damage? Other kind of damage? Dial partially restored/refinished? Thanks! |

These old dials do develop a bit of a unique patina over the years. This looks a bit like water damage though.
Definitely big enough that it should have been disclosed by the seller. It wouldn't bother me, if I knew what I was buying, but undisclosed as a surprise... Hmmm...

Sorry to say, but in these excellent photos, IMO there is also a print problem. The damage IMO will extend and the dial will at some instance show flakes.
I am no expert as some others in the forum, but I have seen many watches and express only my opinion based on this experience.

Was this posted for sale on this forum? Would be good to know which sellers don't disclose this type of information. Personally I would return it but it depends on many other personal factors.

Looks like a very nice Mk-1 dial....with a big BUT...
The macro pictures are bringing up detail on the writing that makes it distorted because the crystal has some imperfections, I do not think that is an issue. I think the writing is fine. Yes there appears to be some issue with the dial around the edge that was hopefully contained at some point. However, I would have concern with getting the watch serviced and having the edge "rip/tear" some of top when taking it out of the case. You will not know unless you get it serviced. Was the watch serviced recently? Do you know the service history? I am not an expert but I did stay at a Holiday Inn recently... |

...I fully respect the money you paid for, but this watch seems fully deserted, cyclops is off, mold has grown on the watch , it seems that it was sold right after it was taken off a wrist.
The experts shall justify price v's value of watch.

The seller did say
that the watch has been recently serviced.
I sent him a message last night after receiving the watch regarding when exactly was the watch serviced and who performed the service. No reply yet... |

I would return it and find a better example. The damage to the dial should have been disclosed by the seller.

And the distortion of the crystal to the appearence of the crown and text sharpness is out of the question. As is the 200 m IMO. Just wait for the opinion of the people that really know the dials. I wish I am wrong !

Seller's answer: "The watch was serviced by the shop that I bought it from a few years ago in West Palm Beach Fl. During their service the watch was pressure tested and shown to be water proof."
You were right... I guess "A few years ago" = "Recently" for some folks... |

Although you bought this at a good price (seller knew what he was selling) I would return it as that would bug me, shame really. Search out a better example, albeit you will probably have to pay more.

Seller probably did not have a clue but it is great that they are offering you the opportunity to return it..
It is a shame with such a nice printing on the dial! |
