18K Gold Apple Watch could utilize 30% of world's gold production to sustain demand

Really? Wishful thinking? Gold crisis?

For the record, I'll be getting an Apple Watch, but it isn't going to be gold. And I'm going to wear it on my reserved right wrist. Purely as an information tool, not a watch.

18K Gold Apple Watch could utilize 30% of world's gold production to sustain demand

Remember the 18K gold Apple Watch we mentioned? Well if rumors are to be believed, then it seems like the company could be playing with matches in a room full of gasoline with regards to this particular device. One Josh Center who works with a company called TidBits did the math regarding the amount of Gold that Apple would require in order to sustain production and supply of the gold edition Watches they intended to sell, and the numbers were a little staggering.

As it seems, Apple could be bidding for a full one thirds of the world’s annual gold supply to get these watches to their loyal consumers. That’s no joke! The number was better explained with the example that about 7,000 metric tons of gold, the amount that’s stored at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, could be utilized to meet the expected demand for the watches in less than 10 years!

I'll probably buy one (albeit not gold) and probably get rid of it within 2 months.

WHA?!

"This kind of cost analysis says that the global gold prices could be heading for some very rough waters as Apple has plans to sell at least a million gold Apple Watches every month! "

There is not going to be a $10,000 Apple Watch. Not even close.

This is on the level of fairies.

No way. They will sell very few gold Apple watches and soon stop the gold Apple watch production. My guess.

I'm not sure how Apple does it, but they do manipulate the media somehow.

How they can get so many "journalists" to hype their products is beyond me.

This is nothing but click bait and Apple hype.

For me, apple and watches is like BMW and bicycle. I also wouldn't buy a BMW bike. For me a watch has to be made from one of the old-school manufactures: Rolex, Omega, Longines...

I had assumed that the "gold" variant was just gold in color, thus plated.

It is a piece of electronics that will be obsolete in 2 years, the plating will wear out in about the same time, perfect. It makes no sense at all having the case in solid gold.

I predict they announce a trade-in program at their next event, along with pricing. The trade-in program will guarantee Apple Store credit to the original registered owner, as long as the device was purchased at an Apple Store or the Apple Online Store.

For example, the retail price will be $4,000, and they will guarantee a "buy-back" (store credit) of $2,500.

This would make the $1,500 cost compare against the expected $500 instead of standing on its own.

I actually think gold will be the highest in demand for the Apple Watch. A significant percentage of early adopters will be wearing the watch for the status of having the latest and the greatest. Apple is also genius at boosting demand on their highest margin items by limiting early supply, which only drives a certain segment of their customers crazy with desire. How many of those folks in line for the iPhone on open day need 128gb on their phones? It's silly, really. But you tell them that model is backordered, and they want it more. It will be the same with the Apple Watch.

I don't believe these reports that the gold Apple watch will be $10k. I don't even think it will be $3k. When you read the threads that break down the actual cost of the gold in a 18k gold Rolex President, and then scale it down to a much slimmer form factor of the Apple Watch, there is no reason to believe Apple would price one so high - they don't need to.

Prices are to be announced in the first week of March.

I had a friend that bought the first digital watch in 18kt from Pulsar. I would guess it isn't worth more than scrap metal today. What do you do when the Apple 2 or 1S comes out?

The same thing you do when the new iPhone comes out and renders your iPhone obsolete -- you sell it on ebay to someone happy with the older version.

No one who buys an Apple Watch is worried about retaining the value of the investment on their wrist. They want cool functions and status. When cooler functions come out, they will ditch it the same way they will ditch their $1,000 iPhone 6-plus. This is a generation that has not taken a single thing they've ever bought to a repair shop ever. They just throw it away and get a new one.

Exactly.
Especially from what I heard how much the gold models will cost, it's even more stupid. I like the gold, and if it were gold plated and if I were interested in it, and if it were a bit more expensive than the SS version, sure. But 18K gold case? Hells no!

Apple wouldn't begin to dent the amount of recycled gold from several sources (which is seldom reflected in newly mined gold supply reports). BTW, every 1000 recycled cellphones yield about 1 oz. This, plus the circuit boards, jewelry and scrap from foundries would easily cover solid gold Apple watches methinks.
