Interesting Sub for sale with warranty paper.

I found this Submariner 16610 for sale here on the forum, and as I often do with these early model watches, checked the info in the warranty paper. This Sub has an "L" prefix serial number which is a very early serial number for the 16610. Normally, you do not find many 16610s for sale with the "L" prefix, let alone find one with the warranty paper. I didn't find any issues with the watch except for the service replacement dial and the warranty paper appears to be genuine.

What I found interesting was the date the watch was sold. October 1984! From what I know, this could not be possible but could it be probable? While not questioning the seller, or directing any suspicions at him, I do find the selling date interesting - to say the least.

Anyone seen this before?

Some people write their 4's almost like 9's. I teach English to immigrants and most of them were taught a closed 4 that resembles a 9 if written quickly.

That might be the answer. I magnified the image and it appears that it could be "89" and not "84." That would explain it.

This seems to be the case to me as well.
Also, the RSC guarantee states 16610 L-Serial. They would not have provided this certificate if that was not the serial number to that watch as it was issued (as a 16610)

Did you send the seller a PM? Could probably answer the question for you fairly quickly.....
