  • The thing that get interesting is (1) matte dial
  • (2) it seems the T (signify tritium) was used by MOD in an effort to get rid of radium....however, IMHo,the markers still look like radium as compared to the puffy/malteser style early tritium
  • (3)the letter 'T" also looks a little different to other early "t" ie the A/6538.....(again the lume markers & arabic numerials of the A/6538 looks more like the puffy style early tritium markers )
  • (4) The changeover to Tritium was early 60's(?), but this watch based on caseback and period of manufacture of the 6150 suggest a 1953 timeframe...nearly 10 years earlier..maybe it was recalled back for changeover by MOD......
The complexities of watches like this are very interesting and provides for good hypothesizing.......

cheers Mark
the indexes were extremely "dirty" : after cleaning the dial with a very soft
sponge they looked far more clear ( shade of colour changed from green to dark yellow ).
in my opinion they weren't with radium , so it's possible that it was a dial replaced , but not certainly a MOD reprinting due to his high quality.

....yup the quality of the Crown, and wordings appear to be significantly better than A/6538...
thanks Marcello, you are a wealth of info when it comes to this model.... If would be great if you could share more info if you do happen to have any about the the 6150 or early explorers in general!......

cheers

I love this very subtle Rolex ad showing the watch worn on Everest and paying tribute to Sir John Hunt's expedition.

I have my grandfathers 6150 first quarter 1953 pre-explorer, guilt dial, mercedes hands. Marked Precision it still has the original Super Oyster crown and after a service keeps perfect time 61 years later.

Here's my 3rd quarter 1958 Ref. 5505 Everest. Bought it at an estate jeweller's in 1990 in Nanaimo, BC, Canada. Rolex Korea serviced it in 1998 (I was living there at the time) and replaced the original domed crystal and crown with RSC parts. Lesson learned: don't have your watch serviced by people with whom you cannot communicate!

This is my "Everest Tribute" Explorer ref. 6150 from 1953. The serial number is very close to the 6150 worn by George Band who was in the 1953 Everest expedition with Edmund Hillary.

The signatures on the front of the strap are Peter Hillary (Sir Ed's son) and Jamling Norgay (Sherpa Tenzing's son)

and on the back, the late George Band

It's one of my favourite watches!

Hi you experts out there,
I know that the explorer 6610 uses the 1030 movement and just like many of the rolexes made in the late 50's, but can someone share which DJ or DD share the exact same case? And what is the number of the DJ/ or DD that share the same housing/ case? My cousin wants to know as he wants to know as someone is trying to sell him a watch today?
Many thanks, pin

Hey Guys,
I found a nice vintage rolex that I would like to buy from a serious trader. I informed myself online but can't really find anything about the reference of this watch besides the post of Marcello. The pic seems to be the watch that I would like to buy.

I was hoping that you experts can give me some more infos.
Below some details and pics:

1956
ref 6352
They told me that all parts are original. Can you confirm this?
Why does it have two reference numbers? is that bad? is this less valuable?

Thanks a lot!! :)
