First post-Greetings to all!
Hi everyone,
I thought i would use my first post as a quick intro, photos to follow(i promise), and my introduction to Rolex(put the kettle on!) Anyway, years ago(70s) my father was in the Royal Navy and wore a Submariner every day. I think it was a 5513, but recently when i showed him a photo, he seemed to think that it had 'Sword Hands'. Before everyone gets too excited, the watch stopped working and it was consigned to his jewellery box next to his bed for probably 5 years or so. By this time i was already a Bond fan and had noticed that he had the same watch as my Dad, i can remember going in there and looking at it occasionally and hoping that he would let me have it one day. Alas, this was not the case and my elder brother got the privilege(i am not usually a sore loser but i did what i could to stop this from happening including saying that if he gave it to him, 'he would sell it but if he gave it to me i would keep it forever'. Needless to say, less than a year later it was gone forever, i asked my brother why he sold it and he said he needed the money. I told him that he should've sold it to me to keep it in the family(this became a sore point to this day!). Fast forward to 2007, i get a surprise message from the old man saying 'just bought a no-date Submariner, in 20 years it's yours. Love Dad' As if i wasn't already a bit overjoyed with the world and starting to believe in karma etc. i happened to be standing next to my brother(the same one) and took great delightin showing him the message and then gloating for about two and a half hours afterwards. Was everything right again with the world? let's say enough to get over the original(almost) and move on. By the way, it was a 14060M, which he never wears as he 'doesnt want t get it scratched'. The kettle is probably boiled by now. By 2013, i decided that i couldnt wait another 15-odd years for this watch, so bought an amazing Ebel Chronograph 9137240(?) whichis a absolute work of art, but not a Rolex. Then in early 2014, as it was all i could afford it at the time, bought a Speedmaster Reduced. A nice watch but was a bit disappointed that it didnt give me the 'fuzziness' i was expecting. As my work picked up considerably(read pay) i thought i needed a Rolex, so the hunt began. Now, i dont need to go into all the emotions that go into these things because you all have been there i am sure, but i knew that i would/could not buy a Sub. I decided on an Polar explorer 2 and got a 1994 Tritium in April last year-Loved it! Then i discovered this forum, which made me realise that i had made a rookie error-hand and dial not matching(dum dum duuuum!) I still loved it though, and can fix it later one way or the other so no big deal. The other thing was that i thought i would wear this amazing thing and not worry about it-wrong, even though i wore it for most of last year pretty much all the time i still worried about it(first Rolex etc.) During this time i had come in to a bit of cash and decided i was hooked- time for next Rolex- 1675 pepsi from 1971- whoa! watch royalty. There is something about that watch that makes me turn the light back on at night and look at it(Castaway style!). A keeper. So, as the Xmas bonus rattled into my bank account, i needed to to feed the habit again. As i wanted something i could wear at work and not worry too much, after much research decided on a 114270, which i traded the Speedmaster in for(and a bit of cash). Great everyday watch, wear it on a nato at work and dont worry at all about it. Happy days. Apologies if your tea or coffee has gone cold, this is a very long winded story so i will stop it now. Photos will follow later and i am keeping last weekend's purchase for another time. Thanks for being here and for all of the advice, photos and general watchiness. Jono |

Welcome to the forum. Did you ever confirm if your dad's original Sub had sword hands or not? Was there ever any photos taken of it?

Perhaps a good question to your dad would be if he can remember if his old sub had a metal bracelet or had a nylon (NATO) strap. |

Hi Guys, Thanks.
It definitely had a steel bracelet so i think his memory is off. so i believe it was a 5513. Cant find any good photos of it as looked last year when i was at my Dad's house. Never mind. Tried uploading some photos this morning but they have disappeared. Will put some up... Laters... |
