I finally had the opportunity to make a shielded box for the watch. The box has 2 layers of lead tape on every surface of the inside of a small plastic box.
I also made a shielded sleeve for the watch which made of a single layer to lead tape over a small plastic bag. After all this I was able to get the rad levels down to about 4uSV/hr with my Geiger counter on the box surface that is nearest to the face of the watch... While I was doing this I took another measurement of the watch...it got up to 162uSv/hr on the dial side...don't fall asleep with it or put it in your pocket... |

Honestly with all the vintage watch sales on and all the shipping around the USA I doubt that this level is high enough for any concern by the Uncle Sam... If you are about 2ft from the source you don't even pick anything up....you have to be with in 8 or so inches to detect the radiation.
But now that I know I do the buyer a service and actually let them know on my ads the actual rad levels of the watch if applicable. The bad part is there are many people who have no idea that their watch is radioactive...guess ignorance can be bliss:) |
