trying to understand 1675 Gilt dial...
As everyone always says around here, RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH
I've been trying to understand the differences in the 1675 GMTs...love the reference thread about the dials, pointed guards, etc... I saw this dial and am rather confused. The markers seem rather messy - esp at 12 o'clock. The watch is clearly a bit worn (a good thing) - but is the messy marker a result of age/damage...or did someone do a bad job of trying to re-lume it along the way. thanks for the help. |

looks like a poor attempt at a relume to me. also don't think it's a gilt dial.

Indeed, as clarification for the OP the watch in the photo is not a gilt dial. Old lume plots do funny things. I have heard numerous explanations from different 'experts' but one way or another the old lume materials used are not entirely stable. It doesn't necessarily mean a re-lume though this was commonly done at Rolex services and isn't a bad thing per se. It was simply common sense like getting a replacement bracelet. Only collectors of "authentic" watches have earmarked these practices of the past as evil!
