Helping a son identify his father's Rolex
I did earlier this week.
I was on a business trip to meet with a new client. When I was introduced to the staff at the office, I noticed that a young man was wearing a gilt dial GMT. When I commented on it, he thanked me and said it was his deceased father's watch and he was trying to find out more about it. So I helped him with a few things: -- I indentified the age (1963-1964) -- I told him the model number and where to find the serial number -- I showed him how to remove the bracelet and where to look -- I told him about the date stamp inside the case back -- I told him what had been replaced (hands, bracelet and bezel insert) -- I told him the history of the GMT (it turned out his father was a Pan Am pilot for 25 years) -- I told him where to get it serviced and what NOT to do (like replace the dial) He was very grateful. He had so many questions and his father was no longer around to ask. The watch obviously gives him a strong connection to his deceased father. He wears it every day. I was glad to help. At least my WIS knowledge ahs paid off in some small way.

Nice story, you are a good guy Subfiend that is for sure
It quite amazes me the connection that watches can make in families and generations.

That's great Subfiend. Think about how that guy must feel, and probably has an even deeper kindred connection to his dad through the watch!

Thanks to all.
I did tell him about the forum but he did not write it down. He had too many things going through his head at that moment, and I was still being introduced around the office. I am going to mail him the original 1963 Pan Am pilot GMT ad as a surprise gift, so I can tell him again. No, his Dad was not issued the watch by Pan Am. He bought it while he was in the military, then he went to work for Pan Am later.

I can't imagine having a Rolex that was owned and appreciated by my dad. That would have been really cool. What a treasured gift it must be.
