Are watches old school?

I'm 30 and most of the ppl i interact with are of similar age groups and i'd be hard pressed to come across any of them who dont wear watches.

The thing i want to comment on though is the TYPE of watches they wear.

Most of these guys are into their branded products, the most of the watches they were are whopping big monstrosities (with cheap chinese quartz movements) that pass for fashion these days.

I've seen leather bands with studs sticking out of them with VERSACE on the dial, GUCCI watches that i wouldnt take if they were free, CK watches where you almost have to look again cos you're thinking "Why on earth would you strap something like to your wrist in public"....

And the thing that surprises me most is that when watches come up in conversation, and i learn how much some of these things cost - i cant help but wonder why they just couldnt get something from a watch house with history and tradition and designs that are essentially timeless.

dont know if anyone else has noted the same??

Maybe Rolex watches are an acquired taste these days.

Also they are not cheap to buy especially for those in their 20's, and their girlfriends keep them poor having to buy them jewellery.

Then there are all the older guys grabbing the new stock from AD's and bidding up the price of the vintage models.

With all this it's a wonder even I can own a Rolex.

Unlike a fancy car or McMansion... a wristwatch is a mobile/portable symbol of your achievement in this rat race of life. As young people begin to earn wealth and seek to show this off, they'll soon understand the desire to strap-on a Rolex.

I'm starting to believe that SOME watches are starting to become old school, like most "everyday" brands that you see out there. However, there is nooooooooooo way that "fine" watches will ever be old school.

IMO, it all depends though on us and how we can make the next generation learn to appreciate fine watches. Maybe if children can learn about Rolex at a young age, maybe their teens, they will continue to admire Rolex as they get older like we all do. Then they will run TRF after we are all long gone!

I agree, they're LESS popular with people under 40. I am 34 years old and I have one friend that I notice wearing a watch and it's a casio digital watch, most likely under $20. Only a couple of my friends have even noticed my watch and they commented that they hate wearing watches and even if they did they wouldn't spend more than $50 on one.

Perhaps it's a regional thing, and in some cities watch wearing is still popular among younger people. Around here, I rarely see a "nice" watch on anyone under 40. I will see the occasional kid wearing a blinged/iced out watch like the ones seen on MTV. :)

Here is me and my little one, Justin. With his new Cool Kids Orange watch. A couple days after I took this he was on the computer with me looking at other watches he wanted to add to his immanent collection.

I'm 32 and I have worn a watch for as long as I can remember. The watches just keep getting nicer. From an ESQ in college, to a Tag in law school, to a Roadster my first few years of practice, to a PAM 210, and most recently to a SS Daytona and a SS Sub w/date. I love my two newest watches.

Whether my son wants a watch or not, he's getting mine when the time comes. Hope he appreciates them as much as I do but if not, I know I've enjoyed that Rolex on my wrist. (even tho it's been a very short time.)

I'm also in the under 30 group, 27.

I went to the outlet with my friends (age range between 23-26)
one of my friend bought armani watch and one bought Kenneth Cole watch
I like Armani, some of my clothes are either EA or AJ, and my phone is the
Samsung Armani.

But I will not buy an armani watch, in another post about pens,
I will not buy any Montblanc watches since at the first place they make pens not watches.

Most of my friends, age betwwen 26-32, they wear watches, like Swatch, Gucci, Armani etc. But not because they don't have the wealth to afford a better watch, they just like those brands.

I don't understand but I think it depends on how you being raised and what your parents wear. I think if your parents wear eg. rolex, tudor,
sooner or later you will get one and then more and more...

High-profile and high-end watches are more than just 'tellers of time'. Some want to show their wealth with them, others collect them. Many watches tell something about the owner. Because of this, watches will always be in demand. My daughter wears her watch mainly because it is fashionable, the time telling part comes second. Perhaps there is less need for a watch among certain groups of people.

There are other things younger people don't do any more, like reading newspapers and that is becoming a threat. In my country, newspaper sales are on a steep decline.

I never leave home without a watch. I feel naked without one.

I'm 31 and have been wearing watches since middle school. Most of the people I work with are under 35 and most of them wear watches as well. If a person doesn't want to wear a watch, that's their choice. It doesn't affect me one bit.
