Hallmarks

Having recently rejoined the Rolex fraternity (I had an Air King in 1973), I now have a two tone DJ 16203 which says there is 18 carat gold on the bezel, winder and strap.

Is this gold hallmarked anywhere, I can't see one?

For a watches to have a assay mark the material used must be all solid gold like say 9Ct,18Ct or 22Ct and not a mixture of SS and gold. And for all the Rolex TT watches gold/SS they use the Rolex made up word Rolesor is used, again as they cannot call it gold unless made from all gold and bare a assay mark. The term Rolesium is just a made up word by Rolex as they cannot state its platinum unless whole watch is platinum. And over a certain weight on its own gold must bare a essay mark so its possible the hallmark in on the underside of the bezel. Now on TT watches prior to approx 2007 the crowns were just gold capped over steel. But from around 2008/9 they started what they call monobloc crowns, now these are made from solid gold but the center is machined out, to accommodate a stainless steel sleeve, with s.steel threads. Other wise the gold crown if it had gold threads would wear very quickly, but the amount of gold weight difference between the two types is a very very very small amount.

Thanks very much. Found a good link into the Rolex site that follows up on what you've said.

Happy now.
