watches - turning them into bikes!
Hi All,
been a while since I was round. I've gotten back into cycling and have been using up my energy with that. Gotten to the point where I need to sell some watches to fund ongoing bike purchases. Thought I might seek some advice from the forum. Keep in my mind it was hard work and lots of fun building up any sort of collection and I find that each of these watches has a place in my heart. But that said which ones will sell and which ones should I get rid of. Watches are 861 - SMP Blancpain FF Rolex GMT 16713 Rolex DJ Rolex Sub 116610LV Nomos Metro And here is the bike - cost a motza to start with and now some upgrades are taking it into precious metal territory. I could survive without liquidating but do feel that at some point its best to shift resources a bit. Also it is interesting to me to see how well watches liquidate. Of course there is variability in how different watches liquidate and that forms part of my request for feedback today. So I think 3 or 4 have to go. Which ones please? My preference I find over time is for vintage (i love non flat glass). Also I don't want to realise losses. I want to come out even so I can justify myself! |

Love the bike, but you have some pretty expensive watches there, are you really thinking of putting the value of 3-4 into your bike? going to be hard to ever get that money out of your bike.
As always, Rolex are the best watches to sell, they are common enough to buy back, and you won't lose too much. |

Keep the watches--forget the bike.
BUT, if you really want the bike, dump everything but LV (will cover all bases in one watch). |

Sell the Rolexs, you will probably lose less money on those. The Speedmaster covers most bases IMO.

Hi,
yeah I should make it clear that I know I'm not getting money back on the bike. The worst watch for retaining value is twice as good as the best bike I'd reckon. The bike is about fitness and experiences and it is a hobby that costs money up front and then is pretty cheap. Good advice re: Rolex. However they are also my favourites. I love the old ones with the big magnification of date. I was thinking Sub, Nomos and SMP. Keep GMT, DJ and BP. I love the BP but also want to keep it because if I sell that I realise a big loss I think. Probably like the Hulk more but I also think Hulk is such a safe watch. More fun to wear the BP. Just which the BP had a better bracelet. Sub Glidelock is amazing. |

Kinda hard when you love the watches. If it was me, the BP would stay, everything else would be up for grabs. As an aside and very coincidentally, I have decided to start biking for exercise too and just this past week have been down to a few bike shops. God, it can be as expensive as the watch fetish, especially if one starts to think more than just a cruise around the neighborhood . Heaven help me . . .

The Nomos Metro is pretty hard to come by right now. Pent up demand may drive up value but not to what you paid if you paid msrp.
Your least "hit" is going to come from selling any of the Rolex assuming you bought these all new and at MSRP. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Flat glass...looks like you have a few...let those go first.
But Road bikes take a real beating out of the store, unless you are competing as a profession I would opt to keep the watches, keep your old ride / get a cheaper ride and balance the whole thing out by dropping 5 pounds of fat (I have plenty / don't know if you are the same?) at a $cost of zero and resultant performance upgrade. Ps I have been riding single speeds since 1979, nice thing is they never suffer from marketing hype and obsolescence. Seems Road bike gears trains are constantly being upgraded

Tough, all your watches are so different, and really most are good value watches. I do feel like probably one of the divers may have to go as the Hulk and BPFF would probably bring the most back and easiest to replace. Outside of that, it's a really tough choice. I'd say personally the DJ does the least for me, but not sure how much that would sell for now.
Nice collection! |

About wanting to come out even, unless you got them for a steal or a long time ago a loss of some sort would be inevitable I think

cool we've turned it into a bike forum! thanks for some advice here. a few points.
1. lose weight. i'm doing great on that front having lost about 9 kg since i started. i could easily lose another 6 but that would take me into territory not seen since first year uni and i was a whippet! i am not a skinny sort of guy and seem to put muscle on without much effort. my rolfer says it is a viking physiology! but yes, i hear you. you spend around $4 a gram to save weight on a bike (from say around start weight of 7 kg and starting spend of near 10k). thing is a light bike feels good and when you are huffing and puffing it is nice to know you aren't pushing anything you don't need to. plus as i am into watches as beautiful tiny machines so i am into bikes and that ends up expensive. 2. i will lose money here i'm sure 3. rolexes are easier to sell and get better prices. i am living that truth right now. i think i could end up making money (maybe not relative to parallel investment of same funds mind) on the rolexes 4. nomos is popular but at a price point around 15% less than RRP which is what i paid 5. omega speedmaster pro is not as popular a watch as i thought it was. i'm fascinated by the process of testing how liquid an asset watches really are. i think in the states more so. in sydney australia less so. significantly less so. if you didn't have time to wait for the right buyer you are losing money. however no where near the money you lose on bikes (which as far as i can tell is around 50% as soon as you walk out the door). i think in the end i will sell the ones i'm not wearing much (nomos, SMP) and keep the rest. i look forward to travelling to either the states or europe and trading and getting myself a 1680 or 5513. i love the top hat and the superdome and a matt dial. and i think you just do much better (or the pain isn't so apparent) when you trade rather than sell. i figure europe might be a good place to offload the BPFF if it ever comes to that because there isn't enough love for them elsewhere and i really don't want to take a bath on that. and it will come down to keeping the hulk or the BPFF i imagine because two divers doesn't make sense (but 6 watches does of course!). the BPFF would win except for it's lack of bracelet. the glidelock is almost worth wearing without the watch it's so brilliant. i'm not a fan of the BPFF official bracelet (too much bling). i love the taper of the sub bracelet. i am however going to make one last ditch attempt with a brietling (ocean super heritage) shark mesh type bracelet on the BPFF. sorry for the enormous rant. see photo example below. |
