Sub no date 1996 and 2005

What difference between these 2 watches ?

Which one would you buy for the same price and condition ? Why ?

Almost look the same, the different maybe only in the box.

Sub 1996:

• Tritium dial
• Holes in lugs
• Non solid endlinks (SEL)
• Old style diver's link (not "O" marked)
• No laser etched coronet (LEC) in crystal
• Old style paper certifate and box (Rolex anchor included)

Sub 2005:

• SuperLuminova dial
• No holes case
• SEL
• "O" marked diver's link
• LEC in crystal
• Old style paper certificate and MIGHT have the NEW box (click here for more info about boxes) since the shift happened in 2005. Same thing applies to the anchors (click here to read more.

Personally, I would prefer the newest of the two Subs since the lume on the 1996 Sub Date would be almost gone due to the halflife of the Tritium (Click here to read about Rolex Watch Lume).

So I guess that none of them has SEL and that both have holes in the lugs.

Mark, they get shipped in special clear plastic rectangular boxes. When I bought my new GMT in March, my AD showed me a brand new Bluesy, Sub and LV and they were all brand new - I was the first one to try them on straight from the factory.

The last one I bought was my GMT. The AD had it in a baggie because he had set it on hold for me the day before. But he did mention that, when the come in to the store, they take the watches out of the boxes and inventory them. Maybe he meant the plastic boxes to which you refer.

Yes, Mark - I think you're probably right. The 3 new ones I tried on were all brand new out of their 4"x2" clear plastic boxes, the watches fastened round an oval support, with all their seals and protective bezel covers etc inside.

I used to think that they came already in their green boxes, but they get shipped separately.

There would be one further important feature:

The 1996 is a Sub 14060 with the Cal. 3000 movt. (movt. introduced in 1990).

The 2005 is a Sub 14060M with the Cal. 3130 movt. (movt. introduced in 2001).

I would tend to agree. Personally, I prefer functioning lume, but there sure is something about a nicely patinated Tritium dial. And seen from a collector's view, the Tritium dialled Sub ND would undoubtedly be the more desirable of the two.

Depends if you are going to wear it every day or not. If it's a daily wearer, I'd go for the new one and give it your own patina over the next decade or two. If you want a vintage collectable sooner than later, then you'll want to et the older model.

Either one is a good choice and will last a lifetime with care.

Tough choice.........deends on what you already havve in our watch box..
