Scammed on craigslist!!!

yesterdayI bought a rolex oysterdate precision 6694 from a guy on craigslist. i got home and checked it out and it turns out it's fake. I don't know much about rolex watches, but I know there is supposed to be a serial number between the lugs on the bottom of the watch. I took the band of and took a look but couldn't see any serial number! You can see what I'm talking about in the picture below. I contacted the guy and told him that it wasn't authentic because there was no serial number and told him to meet me and make things right. I took a picture of him when we were in the coffee shop and I told him I'd hire an investigator and get the authorities involved.

He told me that it's a vintage watch and over time the serial number gets faded by the endlinks and/or other straps that have been on it over the years, and that I would need a strong loupe to see the serial number, which was 38555xxx according to him.

I told him we needed to meet right away to make things right, no questions asked. He told me to take it to an AD here in SF or some vintage place HQMilton to get it authenticated, but he never responded about meeting me right away to settle this.


What should I do? I have his phone number and a picture of him. I also have a picture of between the lugs and you can't see any numbers in it.

The 18038 dd I sold a year ago, I could not even see the serial # and was very worried my buyer would walk because of it... We met at a jeweler who knew the ins and outs of Rolex and all was well... Adam is spot on, the numbers wear off, enjoy your beauty

That watch looks fine. But take it to a jeweler and have them open it up before you get to worked up.

Thats a legit older all stainless OysterDate. Its not uncommon at all for the serial# and the reference# on the opposite side to be worn away. Its very common on watches that have been worn with a leather strap jut as this was has been. Enjoy your new watch and let this guy off the hook.......its real.

Watch is fine. The Rolex passed on to me that I sold to get a gift had the serial worn away. Happens on the older ones. You are fine. Good looking watch.

Obviating the evidence of theft - you may now be the owner of a watch burgled from its rightful owner...

Everyone must be looking at the pictures of the serial location on small screens, because I can make out several numbers and letters on the monitor I am viewing this thread with. It says, to the best of my ability to read these,
"E88 8 EE" or "E86 8 EE" at the very end of the number/letter series. There are numbers prior to this that while you can tell they were there once, are now too obscured to see.

OP: try blowing up the pic you posted and look again. There are the remains of a serial number on there.

OP: you might try shading the area of the serial with a #2 pencil to get some graphite in the recesses of the serial # remains to get a better read on it.

sfbay; looks like you dodged a bullet. regardless, chalk it up to a serious learning experience. when buying a watch from a stranger go to a jeweler or dealer to verify and don't go to the meet alone. glad it turned out good.

i think what you are seeing are the words "STAINLESS STEEL" in all caps. I just zoomed in on the photo on my laptop.

That says stainless steel.. Serial would be below
