Newbie with a Sub itch! Pls help?
Hello All,
So A few yrs ago I bought an Omega PO and loved it. Then just this past January I treated myself to a new DJII in blue and adore it. Ever since, the 45.5 PO felt very large and I just SOLD it. Now I have room for what I should have bought in the first place. A no date Sub! I have been reading many threads here (all great ty) and learning about the various models and series. There was one post with the diff years and models/series that was super helpful but I can't seem to find it. Can some one repost it please? I am leaning toward a minty 14060M. I really appreciate the clean look of this watch. Some q's: If I buy an older version it will need service correct? Even if its new old stock? Every 7 yrs or so? Any sources the forum trusts/recommends? I live in Tor, Canada and would love a FTF dealer/seller if poss. Thank you for this great resource! Joe |

I have a Y-serial number 14060m sub (2 Lines ) and love the watch. As far as service, you will find a variety of responses and recommendations. My conversations with each RSC in North America recommends service when there is a problem (i.e. running fast/slow, etc.). So, even an "older version" may not need service.

I like mine on a NATO for the Sumertime. Takes some weight out of it. Looks great all year long.

Servicing should depend on use. Little to service if the watch is unused or little used, imho. If it is well but runs well then I'd still hold off servicing until it either stops tracking time correctly, loses reserve, or show some sort of abnormality. On the other hand it is a good idea to get it tested for depth capability prior to getting it wet. On the other hand I just got mine back from service and I love my old 14060. You should post in WTB subforum after you get a pledge membership (required).

Check through the reference library on the site. Search for Tritium to Luminova change over date, 14060M two line to four line switch date, and parachrom hairspring introduction dates. Those are the only changes of which I'm aware.
I believe parachom was 2000, two line to four line was mid Z serial (approx. 2007), and Luminova from tritium (T<25) was about 1998, and Luminova only lasted for 1 yr (SWISS) before going to SuperLuminova (SWISS MADE). The reason I like the older is that it is so much more comfortable on my wrist. |

If you are really set on an older model then who am I to stop you. I'd offer that the newer Submariner in ceramic can be had for a negligible price difference in the grand scheme of things. I own a 16610 and while I love the watch as it was my first Rolex; after owning the newer Datejust II, the older Submariner might not feel as substantial. Part of the reason I got a 114060 in addition to my 16610 was because the glidelock and ceramic bezel were completely worth it.

Not sure if this is what you're referring to, but this is a cool history of the Sub.

I purchased my Submariner 14060 in November 2001 to celebrate a professional milestone. Since then it's been my daily driver without fail. It's been mechanically sound and keeps excellent time. Every once and a while I'll look at other watches, but nothing has caught my eye yet. It is the definition of a timeless classic.
