Personally if I was not sure what to choose I would take my time and find the newest possible Sub.
Then you can always flip it later on, but believe me you wont.

If you have waited this long a little longer won't make much difference, it is a large investment (for most of us) and you don't want to splash out on a bargain then suffer buyers regret.

Don't worry about box and papers as long as it is legit. Don't be overly concerned with condition so long as it functions correctly. Throw it on a NATO and enjoy!

If I am assuming correctly by your post that this is your first Rolex, buy a well-preserved (recently-serviced, if possible) specimen that is a few years old. Save some money by purchasing WELL below retail, wear it, love it, and as you do, figure out if there is anything about it that you don't like. By that time, you will have fallen in love with the watch (and you won't care), or if not, you will be able to re-sell it without losing a dime.

Such will not be the case if you buy new.

Figure out the look, feel, and features that you want, and the list of candidate watches should be pretty short.

Tudor black bay any color or used sub

I'm wrestling with getting a 16570 black dial or a Black Bay Black as my first high end watch purchase. The Explorer has so much potential as far as increasing in value since it can be had for a little under $4000 pretty regularly with box and papers, but the Black Bay Black is just a cooler looking watch and could be bought brand new, my name on all the papers, and I can put all my own character on it for the years to come.

Complaint of the Explorer: none really, other than I can't find a black dial with box and papers to save my life. Everyone is dumping Polar dials like crazy right now for some reason, and I'd rather not settle for a Polar dial; I think they're ugly and sorta 80's-ish.

My main complaint of the Tudor: I just don't like paying $3500 for a Tudor that basically has the same ETA movement as a $350 Steinhart. If the Black Bay Black had the new Tudor in-house movement, it would be a no-brainer. But the 16570 seems to be the better choice.

Thoughts?

This is such a typical dilemma. In this price range you have the 39mm OP's, Explorer, Explorer 2's (16570), Milgauss or DJ. Or a slight stretch for a DJ2 of a Submariner (114060). All great choices. I spent over a year and finally decided on a white Milgauss. While I love it, I'm not sure about the PCL's as an every day watch. So I'm back in the same boat. Now I'm thinking new Explorer or slightly used Submariner (114060). Most days I think the Explorer is the way to go. It just works with everything, then I see a Submariner and just can't decide.

For me it would be no question. Contact davidsw and get your hands on a brand new in box DJ 116200 or excellent condition 116234. Choose your dial and bracelet options, slap it on your wrist and wear it for the rest of your life!

If you can spare an extra 700ish bucks you can get no date ceramic subs for about 5700...

Just go that route especially if your thinking of getting a Milgauss...that is a good second watch.

There will be a ton of used Black Bay Blacks for sale in a year for $2500 or so. I also do not like the polar 16570 (disagree about 80s vibe) but the black dial isn't so bad and I think the price can go nowhere but up. I'd get the Explorer.
