This is a much better looking watch if you are after a James Bond homage, only $500 and has the same movement as the BBB, anyway. ... Blastoff http://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/OC...ntage,817.html

I've seen you post in a bunch of these BBB threads. Man, you really despise this watch

I really want to like the Black Bay line but the hour hand just looks "wonky" to me....love everything else about the watch but that is a deal-breaker for me

Certainly don't despise it. I own a Black Bay, I like the watch but I am not overwhelmed with excitement about it, in fact as an owner I find it a little underwhelming ultimately. The gloss wore off quickly for me so I'm just feeling cautious about excessive hype. I don't focus too much on the price but it is probably overpriced for what it is. Something I like about the original BB red was that it looks to the past but was quirky and new. This new Black I see as a little more cynical attempt to capture market with a pretendies 6538.

Thanks for the article Neil! This will no doubt be a big seller for Tudor

Having owned both the black bay and a steinhart ocean 1 (years ago), I'd have to say that they are not in the same league. The machining and quality of the black bay are miles ahead of the steinhart and while the movement is the same design, it's a superior grade in the Tudor. The bracelets, casework, and SEL fit (a good indicator of machining tolerances) have nothing in common either.

They look similar (they're both based on a Rolex sub design) but that's where the similarities end .

The fact that a $3000 watch shares a movement with a $500 watch bothers me for some reason. The in house movement is part of the draw for me to Rolex as well as the new Palegos.

While I get there is a huge difference between a bone stock Mustang 5.0 and a Shelby 5.0, and I would not be bothered by this enough to NOT buy a Shelby....I too am a bit annoyed that Tudor has the ability to go in-house at a very minimal cost increase but has decided not to in these models. My suspicion is that they are going to release an in-house vintage BB in a year or two AFTER all the people who would/will buy it have already bought this present release or other ETA models. Make no mistake, Rolex knows EXACTLY what we want, but they have to trickle it out over years to maximize their profit. Why? Well, as with another company selling items we can't discuss here, it's because "we suck and they hate us".

By my thinking the BBB vs Steinhart is more like an entry level mustang and a Shelby sharing the same power plant.

I said better looking, not better. The Steinhart is only $500 so I wouldn't expect too much.

See, but they don't. Just because they are both 5.0 litre engines, just as they are both ETA movements, does NOT mean they are the same or that they generate the same performance or that they are aesthetically identical. A "5.0 Ford" and "ETA 2824" are not singular monochromatic terms. Given that, I would be pretty happy with a cosmetically bone stock Ford Mustang with a Shelby 5.0 engine in it...much happier than I would be with the inverse.

The difference between cars and watches though is that, when you buy a Shelby, you get a multi-page laundry list of everything done to and added to the car. Watch companies are much more "reserved" (or is it "sneaky") about this stuff. You would think they would be proud of what they have done to the 5.0 litre Ford engine of the watch world....but somehow they are not and we are supposed to take them at their word that it's "better" as signaled by a higher price? I am not particularly comfortable with that.

Not a fan of the black ring around the crown...and the 41mm size.

I get the movement arguments as well.

All in all, it's too "homagy" for me.
