I bought my first rolex at 24 just because I wanted it. If I had been older and wiser I may have decided not to buy it and to save the money instead.
I'm glad I wasn't old and wise! It was a 14060 for $2000, and I've definitely never regretted it! |

It depends on the person. I researched buying a new sub or explorer1 for a while until I discovered the black bay blue and fell in love with it. I had tried on both Rolex watches and felt they would not fit my life style. I guess I'm more low key. I'm still interested in the the explorer but after trying it on again yesterday, I'm not sold. Maybe I'm still in the honeymoon phase with the black bay. Lol

So here's a question.
For you first Rolex how much fun is the learning and discovering, basically is it all in the chase. I'm worried if I pull the trigger and buy that the fun part will be over. |

What you have to understand is that for many people their collection is an evolution. By starting with less expensive pieces, they find out what they like, what they don't like, etc. Also, building a small collection is fun, and can later be sold to help fund a larger purchase like a Rolex or Patek.
I don't see it as losing money...more of enjoying a hobby. |

You have to be careful coming to "The Rolex Forums" looking for advice on what to buy. This is NOT your average group of consumers. We are more likely to be COLLECTORS who prefer variety and unique pieces.
It's funny how my perspective changed after I bought my first luxury watch. Before that I thought $500 was a LOT for a watch... now I look at a $7K Reverso and think, "that's not so bad." For a lot of people, the chase is more satisfying than owning the watch. This is a big trap. You will probably not be any happier choosing between your Hulk and BLNR than you would just wearing the hulk every day. I have a 114060, a Speedmaster Pro, and a Reverso Duo. That's more than enough for me. Any more watches will only cut in to the wrist time of the rest. I find myself wearing the Sub most often, and it feels like I neglect the Speedy and Reverso. Before deciding which watch to get, you need to determine how many luxury watches you want in total. When my boss came to me asking which Rolex he should buy, my advice was to get something steel with a black face. I showed him the Sub, GMT, and Datejust and said these are your options if you only want one. Now if you want to spend $20K+ on a few pieces, then go ahead and get the Explorer II Polar and the Blue Datejust. The best advice you'll find here is to TRY IT ON first and get the one that SINGS to you from a trusted seller here on the forums. All other advice should be taken with the understanding that we are a very biased group. |

I literally lost my breath the first time I tried on a 114060. It's a work of art and I appreciate the history, heritage, and quality of the Rolex Submariner. I'm glad I have it, I love wearing it, and I wouldn't sell it for the $5800 I paid. But it's just a stupid, over-priced watch. I've been staying away from the Rolex Forums because it just encourages me to buy more watches that I don't need. Recently I've been helping my boss shop for a Rolex and GUESS WHAT??? I've been thinking about how SWEET that blue Datejust looks (114600). Do I want one? You bet I do. But luckily I can exercise a little self control and save myself the $5500. |

Ha, I appreciate the responses. I am wondering why I cheaped out so much on getting my latest car but am preparing to part with 40 times the amount I have ever spent on a watch before like it's out of necessity.
The watch won't depreciate like the car though right ... |

For me once I buy a watch I do enjoy it but I also turn my eye to the next one, and so the fun and chase begins again only this time I have a nice new watch to keep me and my dastardly plans company.
