Good morning,

Been on the search for a birth year (1966) gilt Sub for a couple of years now. I want something that I can wear in my daily rotation. Something "original" but not necessarily a safe queen collector type piece. I have budgeted 10-15K for this piece. Just curious what the thoughts are on trying to restore this piece. I have an NOS 700 crown and tube, 1966 7206 rivet restored by MY, and a nice faded FF insert in my parts box. The dial is my main concern. Can it be restored/refinished?

Not yet, but I have seen them for sale.

I am far from an expert but I think by the time you factor in the value of all the parts you will change you will be upside down.

That was more in line with my post point. I think with the parts you have you could find a head only sale for the money, or less and have an unrestored dial watch, with the original back it was born with.

It's kind of a project...but you are kind of looking that direction anyway it seems.

You would be far better off to find a good Meters first dial and sell the gilt dial if you like this watch...no one in their right mind would refinish that dial. While it has some flaws...much worse dials are sold daily in watches of that era. That one is certainly not that bad. The watch is 50 years old. If you want a perfect dial find a watch with one in it.

Seems like you've got too many parts already to work with a watch like this. Remember anything you take off of it..you can also re sell. The insert is maybe not "faded"...oh horrors...but it's not a bad fat font insert. It'll bring 350.00. The back is a real III 70 5513 back...somebody needs that. The bracelet...is a safer bracelet to wear but it is also worth 600.00 + used now days. The crown...does it need a new one? You have yours to change out with later if it proves faulty...otherwise your going to have a MINT crown on a kind of polished case.
