Submariner School

Someone please take me to sub school. I am looking for my first sub and have always thought it a nice idea to get a birth year no date (85). That said i am not opposed to other years so far as I know so everyone give me the low down on various references. I don't want the date and I want SS (my budget won't all PM and I hate TT)

Thanks in advance!!

For a no date Sub from 1985 you should be able to find a nice 5513...and that's pretty much your option for a no date Sub from that era.

IMO I would get a 14060M or new 114060 because you'd get newer or new works and luminova, plus a better bracelet.

5513 was the only Sub available in '85, and for the previous 20 years it was the 5513 or 5512. The 14060 replaced it in ~'89

This. Take a look at both. They look, feel, and wear different but are as quality of Subs as you can get. Plus with a newer model you may save on service costs.

I would choose a mid-late 1980s 5513 over a 1990-onwards 14060. The 5513 contains a workhorse 1520 movement, and has that classic-looking plexi dome crystal. I bought one cheaply in poor condition (though the case was in great shape) and had it overhauled by Rolex with a new dial, hands, crown, etc, and it's a great daily wearer.

You should be able to find a good 14060 in the $3500 to $4000 price range. Great bang for the buck and easy to flip if need be. 5513 will cost you a little more money but give your classic look. Happy Hunting!

I have an early '90s 14060 and I love it. A classic 2 line no-date sub. Can't beat it.

+1

You'll also hear a lot of comments about newer movements being better. They probably are but older Subs are COSC and/ or COSC quality. Go for what sings to you...what sings to me are 14060 and prior Submariners. Older references are still great time pieces, work very well, are very accurate and have longevity if taken care of (as with anything mechanical),

If this is gonna your only watch (ie. daily wear) then I'd recommend the newer 14060 for the reason stated here by Larry.

The 5513 with the WG surrounds are not really sought after by many of the collectors so they can often be had for quite a bargain. I'd take a 5513 over a 14060 any time. Once you wear a 5513 you will understand what I mean.

I also have a marathon GSAR, rolex 6298 from 53', and an omega speedmaster pro moon watch. That said this will not be my only and I have a few seiko as well.

I always liked the sub and the Breitling navitimer. I have decided the sub comes first as I will wear it more. The navitimer I feel is too big for my wrist but I love it none the less so I will get one one day since I have my other childhood favorites.

Thanks all for the responses and keep them coming.

Adam, I love your advice but I think that having one refurbished is a bit out of my budget as I am still a poor 30 yr old.

You can still find a 5513 in good condition from your birth year or thereabouts for a good price. As SLS says, the white-gold surround dial models are not really collectible (yet) so they can be had for a similar price to the 14060.

I will have to look into it. Hoping to find before Christmas as it will be my present to me.
